There were a few good on point interventions, and there were some “my organization works on xyz global ill and hence the GDC should solve the problem of xyz global ill” interventions.

Others probably feel differently, but for me the value of these “consultations" is hard to assess.  A sequence of uncoordinated and rushed statements, many of which are not strategic interventions, are read to the co-facilitators and a couple UN staffers in an otherwise empty room.  No dialogue, follow-up on points, etc.  You are in a better position than I to say how much of this finds its way into the ears of the governments who meet in closed sessions that are not shown on UN TV.  Presumably a few friendlies, but as for others….?

I’m sure you recall that last April the TE organized a “deep dive” on Internet governance in which at least a half dozen of us made focused statements about how the GDC should not create a new organization that competed with the IGF.  The TE thanked the participants and then proposed a new organization that competed with the IGF.

FWIW, at yesterday’s GDC stakeholder consultation yesterday, there were nine people registered to speak and in the queue waiting when the co-facilitator announced there were no more speakers and ended the session fifty minutes early.  Not sure why she didn’t see the list, or why the Tech Envoy staff who’d registered the speakers and put them in the publicly visible queue said nothing, but voila the session ended.

 

Seems like UN NY hasn’t quite gotten used to this whole stakeholder participation thing…
