Becky is right. This is about the mission statement not the NTIA statement. And leaving out "the DNS" is a mistake. And frankly, for the past 15 years NTIA statements have had a tendency to conflate "the DNS" with all internet unique identifiers, so if the argument is that it doesn't matter in the mission statement because a news release from the NTIA did it, I think that's clearly wrong. --MM

What does this have to do with the NTIA announcement? This is about the Mission Statement. We still have Commitment # 3 which requires ICANN to fulfill its Mission in a manner that preserves and enhances the neutral and judgment free operation of the DNS, and the operational stability, reliability, security, global interoperability, resilience, and openness of the DNS and the Internet;

Actually, I think this is just a mistake. The current Mission statement explicitly talks about maintaining the security and stability of the Internet¹s unique identifier systems, so I think inserting ³of the DNS² is correct.
Why would that make it a mistake?
It seems perfectly reasonable that "security and stability" be applicable to the DNS, but "openness" be applicable to the Internet.
To assume that the NTIA made a mistake in its announcement that it would be seeking transition seems...questionable. I am sure that announcement was checked very carefully before it was released.

Can staff go back and look at the history of this (in both published and internal versions)?
This may be a case where the rule "assume nothing" should apply.

Are we?
The NTIA transition requirements specify the need to maintain the "security, stability, and resiliency of the Internet DNS" but the "openness of the Internet."
