WEBINAR: Policy Development at ICANN
How You Can Help Shape the Future of the Internet
20 May 2010 at 12.00 UTC and 19.00 UTC
On Thursday 20 May at 12.00 UTC and 19.00 UTC, ICANN Policy Staff will host
a webinar that introduces newcomers to the world of ICANN and policy
development. The webinar will provide an overview of ICANN as an
organization, what issues ICANN policy addresses, who develops policy at
ICANN (and how), and most importantly, how you can become involved and help
ICANN to shape the future of the Internet. This webinar provides useful,
actionable information to you if you are wondering whether a role in
Internet policy development could benefit your or your organization?s
long-term goals.
The two sessions are duplicates, scheduled to accommodate different time
zones. Each session, scheduled to run for 90 minutes, will be conducted in
English only. The meeting will be run in Adobe Connect with a slide
presentation along with a dial-in conference bridge for audio.
Participants will have opportunity to ask questions at the end of each
session. During the course of the webinar, questions may be submitted using
the chat function of Adobe Connect. If you are not able to participate in
either of the live sessions, the slides and MP3 will be made available
shortly after the meeting. The policy staff is always available to answer
any questions that you email to policy-staff@icann.org.
In order to participate, please RSVP via email to the GNSO Secretariat
(gnso.secretariat@gnso.icann.org) to receive the call details. Please
indicate which call you would like to join, 12.00 UTC or 19.00 UTC (to
convert those times into your local time, see:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedform.html). We will send you an
e-mail reminder before the event with log-in and dial-in details. Please DO
NOT RSVP to any other ICANN staff members e-mail address.
About ICANN:
To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into
your computer - a name or a number. That address has to be unique so
computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique
identifiers across the world, so that there can be one global Internet. The
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was formed in
1998. It is a not-for-profit partnership of people from all over the world
dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. It
promotes competition and develops policy on the Internet?s unique
identifiers, primarily the domain name system (DNS), IP addresses, and port
numbers. For further information, please visit http://www.icann.org

Bonjour,
*Whereas numerous stakeholders have, on various occasions, expressed concern about the cost of applying for new gTLDs, and suggested that these costs might hinder applicants requiring assistance, especially those from developing countries*
*Resolved (2010.03.12.46), the Board recognizes the importance of an inclusive New gTLD Program.*
*Resolved (2010.03.12.47), the Board requests stakeholders to work through their SOs and ACs, and form a Working Group to develop a sustainable approach to providing support to applicants requiring assistance in applying for and operating new gTLDs *."

------------------------------
Good morning,
As you already know, the ICANN Board requested in its meeting in Nairobi stakeholders of SOs and ACs to develop an approach to providing support to applicants requiring assistance in applying for and operating new gTLDs (resolution in blue).
Today, 2 ICANN Working Groups are tackling this topic: the first is addressing the categorization of applications and has already come up with a draft report, and the second (Joint SO/AC Working Group on New gTLD Applicant Support) has just started its work, and its duty is to evaluate and propose policy recommendations regarding support to new gTLD applicants in justified cases.
Some of us are members of one or both WGs and I hope most of us subscribe so that the African point of view will be reflected in the recommendations.
AFRALO (African Regional At-Large Organization) decided in its April monthly teleconference to hold a joint meeting with the whole African community participating in the Brussels meeting to discuss the possible support for new gTLD applicants as per the Board resolution in Nairobi, and bring the African point of view to the working group.
Anne Rachel and Heidi think that the proposed joint meeting can be an AfrICANN meeting with a single topic rather then general information sharing one.
? Would you be interested in discussing the support for the new gTLD applicants from Africa during the AfrICANN Meeting in Brussels?
? If yes, would you like the AfrICANN meeting to focus on this single topic? Or would you rather have the AfrICANN meeting be the usual general information exchange that occurs at these meetings with another meeting focusing on the topic of support for the new gTLD applicants from Africa?
With my best regards
