The new ICANN's Fellows and Nextgen video is great except.....
A new ICANN video titled "NextGen & Fellows Video" promoting how one can get involved in ICANN via the Nextgen and Fellows program. It also tries to explain what is the DNS and ICANN in a simple way. https://youtu.be/nrV_ZkDEfIQ I think its a good video. HOWEVER, At the 36 second mark where the voiceover mentions the volunteer community, all of the ACs and SOs are listed to the left side of the spinning globe in a fashion like ICANN | <acronym of AC or SO> <name of AC and SO> EXCEPT for ICANN At-Large - the At-Large logo is displayed. (screenshot attached) The result: 1) Because ICANN At-Large is treated differently, we appear invisible and not part of the community - because the target audience is not aware of the At-Large logo, I suspect many will not see At-Large at all and treat the logo as some sort of arbitrary graphic floating around. 2) The completely different styling makes us be seen as outside the legitimate multi-stakeholder community. We should have been treated and displayed equally as the other ACs and SOs. Regards, Dev Anand
Its more than just poor product placement. It reduces the fellows and netgen into small uniform animated characters vs the use of actual pictures. Tons of good quality pictures exist demonstrating diversity and equity across the globe. It fails also to acknowledge the use of subtitles which all US 501C are obligated to use. Hello to all: I agree with @Dev that the video promotion has a good intention, but it does not convey the expected message of volunteerism. How can you invite individuals to get involved if you do not use actual photos of the community? How do yo expect to get people involved if one of the organizations RALO's is not mentioned (only ICANN as a multistakeholder organization)? How many watching the video understand the concept? I would expect a follow-up video to focus, not on NextGen and Fellowship Programs, but the sort of "technical or skills" (mentioned on video) one should have to apply. If I have to navigate to another site for more details the video is lacking its purpose. Finally, who is going to watch the video? People already involved in ICANN, people curious about what ICANN is all about. This brings me back to the idea of "outreach and engagement". What is the goal? Are we effectively recruiting the audience we seek? My 2cents worth. Hello all, as this is a fellowship originated video, I doubt that they'd do that. The ICANN Comms department asks for our feedback when producing something for the ALAC/At-Large, but I have not seen them ask for community feedback in broader communication videos. It is a pity as the feedback would have been beneficial in this case. Kindest regards, Olivier On 03/05/2017 16:36, Glenn McKnight wrote:

Hi, I watched and rewatched and I'm not troubled by the the inconsistency pointed out by Dev Anand. I understand aspects of the the concerns but In my humble opinion: 1. The inconsistency / error is actually a good advertisement of At-Large. 2. However, "ICANN | ALAC" could feel aggrieved at the displayed video frames. However, the sub-title expansion of "At-Large Advisory Committee" would be appreciably smaller in font and less emphasized than "AT-LARGE" is in the current representation. It seems a bit more memorable than some of the other acronyms displayed, see /Figure 2/ below. I think our contention should be for them to list them alphabetically, which may help "AT-LARGE" to standout more. towards, the top of the frame. Also that frame does not really appear to be a significant point of education nor at action item, it is mostly just entertaining animation. More importantly though, I personally don't think that anything needs to be changed in the video. Our challenge is perhaps, the continued evolution and improvement (improved though it is already) of our outreach, especially to the newcomers, nextgen & fellows plus our effective mentoring of those captured into what is the easiest "catch all" grouping within the ICANN substructure. Also locally and regionally keeping the engine and effectiveness going. I can't help but still feel as if At-Large is outgunned a bit on outreach and mentoring. I'm also more concerned that the call to action "go.icann.org/journey <http://go.icann.org/journey>" redirects to "https://www.icann.org/dprd". I'm not sure this is the most simple, welcoming and salient landing page / introduction that it could have lead potential newcomers to. To touch on the other points lightly: 1. I think it is an effective and entertaining teaser and call to action. 2. This animation reminds me of the Virgin Atlantic (I think) airline safety message. There may sometimes be benefits in having some animations versus humans. 3. I can't speak to the regulations alluded to but YouTube has both /close captioning/ and /transcripts/ which can be enabled, see /Figure 1/ below. 4. Thanks for drawing the video to my attention. I do intend to download it and use it for newcomer outreach oriented playback to appropriate local/regional audiences. 5. Maybe as a /SC on Outreach/ we could script and commission our own outreach video incorporating the best of our ideas? How do we do this? /*Figure 1:* YouTube Closed Captioning & Transcript options for video playback. *Figure 2:* Readability at full screen video of displayed ICANN communities. / Regards, Jason Hynds On 5/3/2017 11:05 AM, Olivier MJ Crépin-Leblond wrote:

A new ICANN video titled "NextGen & Fellows Video" promoting how one can get involved in ICANN via the Nextgen and Fellows program. It also tries to explain what is the DNS and ICANN in a simple way.
I think its a good video.
HOWEVER,
At the 36 second mark where the voiceover mentions the volunteer community, all of the ACs and SOs are listed to the left side of the spinning globe in a fashion like
ICANN | <acronym of AC or SO> <name of AC and SO>
EXCEPT
for ICANN At-Large - the At-Large logo is displayed. (screenshot attached)
The result:
1) Because ICANN At-Large is treated differently, we appear invisible and not part of the community - because the target audience is not aware of the At-Large logo, I suspect many will not see At-Large at all and treat the logo as some sort of arbitrary graphic floating around.
2) The completely different styling makes us be seen as outside the legitimate multi-stakeholder community.
We should have been treated and displayed equally as the other ACs and SOs.
Regards,
Dev Anand

1- Agree that ALAC should show up ( together with ccNSO, GNSO etc) , on that list of community and does not shows up. Complains are expected for this. 2- The focus of this video is on fellowship and next generation program, so not a general focus for ICANN. It is useful video to circulate on Facebooks. 3- ALAC + RALOS shall provide a video for themselves and put at youtube with more promotion pictures from all regions Glenn have all this material. My Suggestion: Why not ask some resources to ICANN to allow Glenn to produce it? Certainly will be quick and we will have the most relevant material to our outreach program.
