FYI -- just to keep you updated, after the ALAC met with the NCSG, Evan Leibovitch announced during the public forum the creation of a joint effort by both communities to work together to prepare for the Brazil meeting etc.
David Olive picked this up and discussed it with the ALAC Leadership Team
on the Friday of the ICANN week. He then shared the fact that this effort was open for every SO/AC to join, on the SO/AC Leadership mailing list. The responses were quick to ask "how do we join this?" and from here onwards, Rafik & I have worked with several people to get the train rolling.
Thanks for the update. The response has been very gratifying. When the idea came up for a joint ALAC/NCSG effort to initiate a community-wide CWG, it was uncertain whether the rest of the community would join in. (After all, the GNSO had already started crafting some very detailed CWG guidelines and this effort was far more spontaneous in its creation.) To that end, one of the action items from the ALAC/NCSG meeting was for Rafik and Olivier, as those groups' chairs, to write to Fadi to get the endorsement necessary to attract participation from the rest of the ICANN community. As it turns out, as Olivier described above, such endorsement was not needed, as our efforts attracted wide involvement from the moment they were publicly known.
The update below will give you an idea where we are at the moment. I am not sure whether this was the original intent since I recall that we probably thought during the ALAC/NCSG meeting that things would start small & grow slowly once we had a few position papers on the WIKI
Actually, as I recall we had *hoped* to gain traction and start activity very quickly. I was personally concerned at the time, that the current work by the GNSO to define the parameters and chartering process of a CWG might be an obstacle, but it turned out this was not the case. In fact, I am delighted with the organic process by which this group has come together. I especially want to thank Holly and León for their willingness to jump in quickly before we even knew how this effort would take shape. - Evan
