Adam, To address some of the items in your email: APTLD - from past discussions we will likely have an APRALO rep at the Bangkok meeting on a panel. IGF - there was the intention of holding an APRALO meeting at IGF Delhi, seeing it falls in the AP region and a call for comments went out after the August APRALO meeting. There is also a proposal to hold a joint APTLD-APRALO meeting at IGF Delhi since APTLD is likely to meet there as well. For 2007 we will be asking the APRALO community shortly as to who will be attending and perhaps find an opportunity to have an informal mini-APRALO meeting on the side if there are enough numbers and interest. So far I know of you, Izumi and myself attending IGF Rio, but I am sure there must be others (at least I hope there are). You may wish to see https://st.icann.org/asiapac/index.cgi?meeting_outcomes_28_august_2007 which relays the outcomes of the last meeting, particularly in reference to APTLD issues above and IGF Delhi. Question for you: you mentioned that very few people from the Asia Pacific region were recommended as speakers for IGF 2007. Could you advise how these recommendations were to be made and to whom? I cannot recall seeing any calls for speaker nominations. I could have missed it though......and perhaps APRALO can make some suggestions on its own accord for the next IGF (particularly seeing it is in our region). APRALO ICANN NomCom - were sent to ALAC by the deadline. See https://st.icann.org/asiapac/index.cgi?nominations At today's meeting, we were informed by one of our ALAC reps (Cheryl) that the voting for these ends tomorrow and a result is expected later this week. I had hoped to join this call, but a rescheduled meeting means I'll likely miss it.
Couple of things: Next APTLD meeting, Bangkok, October 24-25, program available <http://www.aptld.org/bangkokOctober2007/APTLD%20BKK%20Program%20v%201.2.pdf>
IGF -- saw it on the agenda and as a member of the IGF advisory group this is what I thought I might be able to provide info about/answer questions about. IGF will start in seven weeks: 12-15 November (Rio). Only now getting down to business of speaker selection for the main sessions, rather late (mainly due to the late appointment of the advisory group by the secretary general.)
Sessions are:
Critical Internet Resources Access Diversity Openness Security Taking Stock and the way forward Emerging Issues
Details of the topics suggested to be discussed under these themes available in a draft programme <http://www.intgovforum.org/Rio_Meeting/DraftProgramme.24.09.2007.rtf> (last updated Sept 24, so is current.)
Possible speakers have been recommended by various stakeholder groups, including recommendations submitted by individuals (inc self recommendations). Not many people from the Asia Pacific region have been recommended, and very few women. Other than this problem the pool of potential speakers is pretty good. Seven weeks away, so there is very little time to suggest new people, unless you know people who will be in Rio it is probably not worth suggesting new names now. Sorry, I realize it's probably frustrating to hear this kind of comment.
Perhaps of interest to ALAC, there will be a "Meeting Point/Village Square" area where people can set up a table (posters, etc) to showcase their activities. May be worth finding out what ICANN is planning and whether ALAC can be part of any ICANN space.
More information on the IGF website <http://www.intgovforum.org/>
Last - ICANN NomCom. Has the AP RALO selected its delegate for the 2008 NomCom? Time is running out, the person has to be able to get to LA, that means having flights arranged, perhaps a visa, etc.
Thanks,
Adam
