Hi Patrick To the contrary, the ALS input is desperately needed. We have asked for people to join working groups on many issues, to put your ideas and input into the At Large responses on the various ICANN policies up for comment. We need input RIGHT NOW on the new gTLD document from the GNSO, we asked for input on the RAA, we always need input on IDNs and the list goes on and on. I support the appeal, but let's not forget that Nomcom members were added exactly to bring a different type of people into the mechanism, and avoid the risk of the ALS-RALO-ALAC system becoming too closed and self-referential.
Actually, it seems the ALAC is open to different types of people, if the recent nominations of ALAC representatives to the nomcom is any indication. It anyway proves that the domain name registrants / customers are open to have their suppliers represent their interests. As for the ALSes, now we had a nice signing ceremony, an ICANN baseball cap and elections for the RALO representatives to the ALAC, it looks like we are mostly unneeded until the next election.
