The issue here is that a successful attack against the .com servers would take out most of the internet since the technical infrastructure is so heavily dependent on the the .com zone. Any dummy should understand that. He needs to tell you! It is the network solution name servers under attack, not the TLD servers for Verisign. This only effects the .com domains that are using Network Solutions' DNS.
Or at least that is my read from the articles.
