Dear All, So much for an open and free internet? This is a well thought out, deliberate and calculated move designed to limit control over the DNS and in the event that there was to be balkanisation, they would attempt to derive revenue from patents pending. The global community if they are in their right mind should file immediate Objections! Unless this is a part of a general US strategy to retain control over the Internet for all eternity. I saw that over the weekend and my heart sank.
As a registrar I raised this issue with Dr Crocker a couple of years ago and it was pretty clear to me at the time that the entire transfer thing hadn't really been thought about. However transfers are pretty "key" to domains.. People do it all the time - be that a simple change of nameservers, hosting provider or registrar..
To think that someone would actually slap a patent on something like this is truly depressing (ok, maybe I need more coffee).

How can we proceed, if fundamental operations in the DNS System are patented?
