I am somewhat puzzeled with the proposal to ask Ombudsman to informally involved. I have difficulty in understanding what exactly is the problem that needs the Ombudsman's help. Setting aside my very "personal" opinion about Ombudman, being a non-native English speaker, it is quite difficult for me to really "feel" the "tone" of the messages. I see some points Jacqueline raised about the behavior online better be improved. But as some already said, we had a very productive workshop yesterday and it was a pitty that Jacqueline as well as Staff and RALO secretariat could not participate. But one ALAC participant told us later that he usually does not like that kind of "teambuilding" exercise at all, but nevertherless said that the workshop was quite good. One of the facilitators said though she had done many similar teambuilding workshops professionaly, this was the most difficult one to conduct, and I fully agree with it. With that, I don't think ALAC as a whole is in that bad situation. There are a lot of room to be improved, I agree, but I think with reasonable steps we can tackle these issues and become more effective. Now, I would like to see everyone take a deep breath, close eyes, think of others, and try to come to understand each other more without going back to the past too much. izumi 2007/10/30, Thompson, Darlene <DThompson@gov.nu.ca>:

Don't you think that that is exactly how I am feeling right now? It goes both ways. Being threatened with the Ombudsman because you disagree with someone isn't pleasant but, you know, I like and trust Frank so I have no problem him being called in. He is a reasonable man. I have seen very little of the sort of thing you bring out above happening on list. Not to say it hasn't happened but not much. I would think that people are being more turned off by all the petty bickering. And as of yesterday, I thought that maybe we had gotten a handle on this and had a clear vision. I see today that I was wrong. Perhaps it will all end soon, though. We shall have to see.

Since Robert forwarded his "private" email to me to the list, it's only reasonable for me to forward my private response to him as well.

I asked the ombudsman for information, and passed it on. It has nothing to do with freedom of speech except in the freedom of individuals to participate in discussion without feeling that they will be attacked personally, libeled, threatened or just made to feel uncomfortable with expressing themselves.
I haven't made any referral to the ombudsman, and if I were to, then I would do it in my personal capacity, and as Ombudsman contacts are confidential, I certainly wouldn't need to discuss it with the ALAC or anyone. I do not do things on whims and I resent the implication.
This is something that has been in process for a LONG time, I've sent emails asking for a higher class of communication, people have emailed me, people have told me in confidence that they are turned off and not participating because of this exact kind of email that you are sending here. This is an additional step in the same process. Other people are talking to the Ombudsman about this ALREADY. I am trying to prevent this reaching to the stage of formal investigations, by providing information to the group that might assist in building respectful communication. Seems as if you didn't bother to read it.

Jacqueline:
Huh !
Either don't understand your email, or am so surprised that as outgoing chair you would take such an action. To be hones, after a productive and team building day yesterday - you take this bombshell and drop this on us. i'm frankly shocked ...
I am assuming correctly that differences of opinion are such that you - in your own personal capacity - are asking the ombudsman to pass a judgement on individuals in at-large that are exercising their freedom of speech?
An action such as a referral should be done in consultation with the ALAC, and not done on your whim. Please seek the support of your peers, to take such drastic steps.
Might I suggest that - instead - you seek the input of the alac, and see if indeed we concur with your course of action. If obtain support, fine. If not, then no course of action - should be obtain.
In summary - I think I speak for many of those on the ALAC in saying, please seeking clarify your proposed actions. Personally, I think they are most inappropriate.
regards,
Robert

Dear all
As so many of the postings to this list are so disrespectful I have asked the Ombudsman for his input informally, before he gets brought into it formally by people who this has affected negatively. He has offered the following. Please read and attempt to follow some of the suggestions in the documents he has sent, so we can all work productively.
