More seriously, this principle is well adjusted to the datacommunications strata (Internet, content exchanges) and to English. It is possibly far less adequate in the semantic strata and multicultural environment (meaning and representaion exchanges). You MUST be conservative in what you receive because the rest of the world is necessarily diverse and therfore liberal (in the way your pragmatics sees it) in what it sends. This certainly is a major issue for ALAC as there are not only multiple linguistic but also technical, legal and political cultures among @larges. jfc

I knew Jon well, and always disagreed with him on this. Thankfully this was only an informational RFC, and as such should be viewed in that light. Certainly it was not meant as gospel.
