The NomCom review is ongoing, there's a workshop scheduled by the review committee on 31 October, 17:00 to 18:30. It will be webcast. I do not know what arrangements have been made for remote participation (if any) but if you asked for an email address for comments be set up and monitored during the session I expect that would be done, but there's been a public call for comments. About NomCom selections and criteria. For the past 2 or 3 years the NomCom has asked the ALAC for input on criteria it should consider in making selections. NomCom has asked for and held meetings with the ALAC, and sent copies of the document it uses to describe positions to the ALAC for comment (see <http://nomcom.icann.org/positions-2007.html>) I expect the 2008 NomCom will ask for a meeting and ask for comments on the document. If that happens, please provide comments. If you look at the list of ALAC members you'll see NomCom appointees tend to add regional diversity, generally don't duplicate countries already represented (historically I think exception is Vittorio and Roberto, and people selected from the North American region.) New selected nominees are from Senegal, Vietnam and Brazil. Best, Adam At 9:05 AM +0330 10/13/07, Siavash Shahshahani wrote:
Patrick, I don't see how you can go about listing such countries without creating all kinds of aftereffects. Further there may be other reasons that put individuals from certain territories or with certain characteristics at a disadvantage. So I believe the present system where Nom-Comm is to to ensure some kind of balance in the composition will work if it is carried out correctly. Siavash
Siavash,
Good point indeed. I am sold. Would that mean the nomcom should only select individuals from countries where no ALS exists or likely to appear on the short term ?

Here's a problem for those who think non-comm appointees are unnecessary: There are more than a few countries where NGOs are looked upon with suspicion by the local govt and potential ALSs are simply afraid to apply to ICANN for accreditation. Should we disenfranchise citizens of those countries? Note that the same risk may not necessarily apply to an 'individual' selected by non-comm as long as the individual is well-known and trusted in the country and is not in the business of organizing a group which the govt deems potentially subversive..
