Egyptian Blogger's video to be shown at Human Rights Film Festival
Robert, I just watched the video. Why was such a video shown at an ICANN meeting? The topics addressed by the video have absolutely nothing to do with ICANN's narrow remit... or am I missing some particular nuance?
To be clear it was Not shown at the ICANN meeting in Cairo at all ( this is what I (as Chair) was being critisised for recently... Robert independently hired a room with non ICANN finds and in parralell to the ICANN meeting showed the video and invited a few people (from an open invitation to any one in Cairo at ICANN) to both see this video and I believe a small social gathering also occurred one evening where some ALAC people as individuals met with one or more of the bloggers ... I was very specific about keeping all of these activities at arms length from ALAC and the At-Large role in ICANN and in fact shut down and recreated a new chat space during the meeting to ensure that there *was no* cross over even in discussion(s) I agree this as an off topic (in terms of it being blended with ICANN's remit not the value of the activity per se) at the time and I stand by that decision as Chair I should also note to the list that the extension of this is that the posting by Robert could be/should be? Also considered off topic for the list and as such I've asked to add the topic of List(s) use to the AOB section of the next Agenda to gauge the clear direction of the ALAC on this matter... yes. ICANN's strategy is the "Internet for the Rich". Civil Rights are all right, but ICANN does favor them over "Civil Defense". What is the use to fight for the right to use the way you want something you are first prevented to access? All I know, is that ICANN purposely prevents us to have the Internet we should have. With "IPv6 to IPv6" peer to peer for everyone, support of the Virtual Root, no-spam, full multilingual support, multicast, efficient multihoming, simpler and more secure routing, cheaper network nodes, etc. These things have nothing to do with RFCs and technology. They have to do with the way ICANN does not catalyse them through their names and numbers misgovernance. Would it be to favor some of its "stakeholders"? Dont ask me, but you may want to read their (and ISOC's) Form 990. Now, you may also consider that replacing ICANN in governing the Internet better is in the direct technical reach of the sole @larges, that is of ALAC, or of ATLARGE - but not of the sole GNSO. jfc
