Dear all, As many of us travel to the U.S. from very diverse origins and for very varied reasons, I thought it would be useful for you to know that enhanced security measures are being put in place by the TSA and now seem to require that all electronic devices are properly powered as powerless devices will not be allowed on board the aircraft. This can be specially important since the next ICANN meeting will take place in Los Angeles. Heres a link to the official statement: http://www.tsa.gov/press/releases/2014/07/06/enhanced-security-measures-cert... I hope the information is useful. Best regards, León
British Airways have posted an advisory on this: http://www.britishairways.com/travel/flightops/public/en_ie?p_faqid=5047&sou... It's a bit nutty: "All electronic devices must have power and if you are unable to power up your item you will not be allowed to fly" So if you've got a dodgy battery or can't find a power source .. It can be summarized like this: If you bring an electronic device onboard, a TSA officer may require that you to demonstrate that you can use the device. This means that when you get to security, either the device must already be on (as most phones are) or can be booted in front of the officer. So the warning is to make sure that the battery of your device is charged before you go to security. If you are unable to start your device because of low battery, or if the battery isn't working, the TSA will not allow the device on the aircraft, you will have to leave it behind. It appears they are looking for devices that look on the outside like phones and laptops but do not function because they have ... other ... things inside. So, the logical conclusion to all this 'nuttiness' (thankyou Michele) is that we shall no longer travel with any hardware. We shall upload our laptops and smartphones to a 'cloud' somewhere, and on arrival rent local hardware for the duration of the mission. (Not so far-fetched. in 2003 we were still renting GSM handsets sur place, for want of international roaming). Memo to self: don't forget to delete your data when you check out! ;-)) CW On 07 Jul 2014, at 22:00, "W. Hülsmann (DVD e.V.)" <huelsmann@datenschutzverein.org> wrote:

This is not entirely new. I experienced this while traveling during the years right after 9/11. I was asked to put my laptop on quite a few occasions. If the laptop was not charged we found somewhere to plug it in just to make sure. Lance On Mon, Jul 7, 2014 at 4:51 PM, Evan Leibovitch <evan@telly.org> wrote:

FWIW, demonstrating an electronic device works is often required when entering a US Federal building. Other than this, perhaps At Large could start early work on visa process for LA. London was bad for a few, partly a result of the UK Passport Office's mess <http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-28201491>, but also UK's over-stringent controls. Doesn't hurt to get these things started early. Adam On Jul 8, 2014, at 5:51 AM, Evan Leibovitch wrote:
