Inviting Indian public to New Delhi meeting
I recommend that ALAC make a concerted effort to invite a large number of members of the Indian Internet-using public to the New Delhi meeting. It would be very useful to hear how their concerns compare with those we've heard so far, and to hear what new issues they raise. How might we find ways to contact the Indian Internet-using public? --Wendy -- Wendy Seltzer -- wendy@seltzer.org Visiting Professor, Northeastern University School of Law Fellow, Berkman Center for Internet & Society http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/seltzer.html http://www.chillingeffects.org/ https://www.torproject.org/
Further to the points raised and discussed at our ALAC meeting just finished... I will draft a pro forma invitation if that is of some use... Not easy to get general public to meetings held on week days, people work. Think you have to be in the industry (in some way) to want to spend a week at ICANN even if it's in your home town. And it's a bit late for outreach to people from outside Delhi. But I've written to Madan to see what he suggests, if he can write something up from the local IT media. blogs etc. You could ask Ramaraj if he could get a note on the Sify home page (but that would be a bit like asking Vint to add a note about the LA meeting to google.com, but there might be local Delhi pages -- don't know how Sify is organized.) Asking his advice would anyway make sense. There seems to be an ISOC Delhi chapter. Bit late to be thinking of this now. Perhaps the EURALO could start planning some outreach for Paris? Can I ask how far people have got with involving the local community in the Delhi meeting? I am trying to do the same thing in my role and have been putting in phonecalls and trying to get a feel for what is likely to most interest those living in Delhi. Hi Vanda, all So far 114 of the 492 people that have pre-registered are from India. That's 23 percent. Based on the data I have for nine ICANN meetings, the average local attendance is 33 percent (the highest was 53 percent). So I think there's some way to go. I'd also really like to see ICANN meetings take on a more regional feel in the sense that the issues most pertinent to that country or region form a part of the meeting agenda. After all, why else bother appearing all over the world three times a year? But those regional agenda additions won't happen without the locals being involved. I am hoping to vastly improve my efforts so far with respect to this and make Paris a big opportunity for really involving people. That blends well with the interests of the proposed Summit. I certainly hope you'll join our planning group in Delhi. - Evan
There is one certified ALS in India, which is also a member of APRALO. The local contact can either be the ALS or APRALO. Isn't it a new list? The name is interesting. Hong On 1/8/08, Wendy Seltzer <wendy@seltzer.com> wrote:
