Creation of Election Rules Working Group
An ad hoc ALAC Election Rules Working Group has been created to help define the election rules for selecting the Board liaison. The working group is seeking input , specifically a text for a recommended procedure. Wiki - with details is available at the following URL: https://st.icann.org/alac/index.cgi?election_rules_working_group Members: * Cheryl Langdon-Orr (Asia Pacific) * Robert Guerra (North America) * Veronica Cretu (Europe) Current text is as follows: Where there are more than two candidates, I recommend single transferrable vote / instant runoff, with the election decided by simple majority of the votes cast: Each voter ranks the candidates 1-N #1 votes are tabulated; If one candidate has a majority, that candidate wins. If not, The candidate with fewest #1 votes is dropped from the list and his/ her next (#2) votes are allocated to the remaining candidates; The process continues until one candidate has a simple majority of the votes. That candidate is the winner. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Transferable_Vote

I don't want to enter into this, being a candidate, but I have made the point that it might be better to build on the existing rules, so that we keep the idea of having a single "rules of procedure" document which will grow over time, rather than ad-hoc bits and pieces. -- vb. Vittorio Bertola - vb [a] bertola.eu <-------- --------> finally with a new website at http://bertola.eu/ <--------
I would be fine with recommending that the text drafted by the Working Group (WG) also be used for other appointments and/or elections. regards, Robert --- Robert Guerra <rguerra@privaterra.ca> Managing Director, Privaterra Tel +1 416 893 0377 On 29-Jun-07, at 9:36 AM, Vittorio Bertola wrote:

Vittorio The WG is to revise the ROP document, create consistency, etc. not to create a whole new document. My understanding was that this group was supposed to do a cleanup of the overall ALAC Rules of Procedure. These rules include the election/voting details, but are wider than just that. (And I just checked with Cheryl and she concurs.) Alan At 29/06/2007 09:16 AM, Robert Guerra wrote:

Dear Robert That is incorrect. The ALAC did not create an "Election Rules Working Group". A working group has been formed to review the entire ROP document and fix it up for submission to the ALAC by Thursday July 5 for discussion/vote at the teleconference on July 10th. Election rules for ALL positions are part of this, as well as much more. The original document is online on the wiki. Sorry, I had a different impression being the person who proposed it. I was looking for a group of native English speakers to edit the existing text and Cheryl asked that one non-native speaker be included. That was it. Siavash
