Hi All, It's good that everyone is thinking of how to make this as easy as possible for survey takers. Below are a few ideas that might help to increase response rates and/or decrease burden on survey-takers. If you have adopted them already, please forgive me for being an inconsistent follower of your diligent work. *At the top of the survey and in communications about the survey, let folks know in simple plain language the value the survey has for them; how the information will be used; and by whom. "By filling out this survey you are helping…." * Give people an estimated time for how long the survey will take to fill out. (This should be based on the time it actually takes a few early volunteers to fill it out.) *Signal how many questions a respondent has to completed throughout the survey. (For example "X% complete" or "7 of 8 questions completed.") People will be a lot happier with a longer survey if they know it before hand and can assess their progress as they move through it. * For each language that the survey is translated into, have at least one person take the survey while reading it aloud while someone else listens along. This is the fastest and most accurate way to identify confusing and ambiguous language. Repeat the process until no one is confused. Then unloose on the masses. Testing with a real person is incredibly helpful! *Give people the option of filling out the survey by other means. For example, if it's a web survey, also give people the option of emailing responses, or by phone interview, etc. I'm using these as examples of alternative media, those of you more familiar with different regions will know the preferred range of media people are comfortable with and have access to.
