Bart, Colleagues, FYI, hereafter some discussion we had last month with Barbara about the increased budget allocated to IANA which sounds like a good news for IANA users, in particular ccTLD operators.
Until now we have only one volunteer ( Dotty) from the Council. Any others?
I would have participate, unfortunatly this clashes with CENTR GA. Ideally and if possible, I would suggest that the ccNSO investigate and respond to the consultation as appropriate. This is typically a topic on which could collectively bring an added value to the cc community. This involves business continuity issues (shared in the budget with IT), and realigning server structures to provide greater redundancy and security (again, working closely with IT). IANA has spent it's greatest energies on working directly with stakeholder groups to define community needs and wishes for IANA and we are now at a point where we need to optimize resources within IANA to sustain those efforts. Several of our processes are being automated, both outward facing services, and internal management processes. To support this greater reliance on automation, IANA is also hiring more technical staff and service support management. This will allow our stakeholder managers more opportunities to focus on the stakeholders, not managing internal tools. Currently, IANA spends somewhat more of its budget on IETF-related issues than on DNS-related issues, but that ratio will obviously shift as the new TLD process gets underway. Another element in the changes to IANA's budget this year is the need to address that shift in emphasis, and to properly staff IANA to support the influx of new TLDs. The operational plan is where most of the details of specific projects and their metrics for success can be found. I'll work with Kim and Doug Brent to prepare a presentation on this that we can share in Paris. Regards, -Barb On 5/20/08 8:42 AM, "Olivier Guillard" <Olivier.Guillard@nic.fr> wrote:
Kim, David, Barbara,
the 2009 budget foresees an increase of the IANA budget from $781,00 in 2008 to $2,488,679 (a 219% increase ! ).
Globally, that an excellent good news: congratulation !
Looking at it a bit more closely, I find in the plan that :
" The improvement of the systems for ICANN's infrastructure and IANA's level of functioning are key priorities."
and
" Automation of services, statistical reporting, business continuity, hardening security, and clarifying IANA's services for its customers are all important outcomes of this work."
It is however not clear how these objective will be met, nor which metrics will be used to evaluate if they are fullfilled (hen reading the Budget table summaries page 12 for example).
I see page 22 additional info : "Capital Budget"
Is "Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery" allocated to IANA ?
I know that this is a bit difficult to respond to this one, but I ask anyway : is this possible to have an idea of how the IANA budget is distributed internally across the different services that IANA provides ? (for example, what will be allocated for introduction of new GTLDs ? For idns ? )
I note that DNSSEC is largely mentionned.
I understand the major investment in security, could you please elaborate a bit ?
Thanks,
--- Olivier

Not red yet, but I already note this:
"- Invest in IANA services and staffing to improve service availability, automation, response time, and disaster recovery "
