P From:owner-ccnso-council@icann.org<mailto:owner-ccnso-council@icann.org> [mailto:owner-ccnso-council@icann.org] On Behalf Of Patrick Myles Sent: 21 October 2015 16:52 To: ccnso-council@icann.org<mailto:ccnso-council@icann.org> Cc: Bart Boswinkel <bart.boswinkel@icann.org<mailto:bart.boswinkel@icann.org>> Subject: [ccnso-council] GNSO update (ICANN54) Hi Councillors, Below you’ll find a short set of high level points on GNSO activities over this week at ICANN54. The CENTR report on ICANN54 will be published at the latest on Friday and will contain a much greater depth of information. High level items – GNSO council/related at ICANN54 - Next generation Registration Directory Services (RDS) – At their council meeting, the GNSO formally deferred a motion on the charter stating that complexity as well as high importance of the work meant it requires more time for careful consideration. - Rights protection mechanisms (RPMs): there is a preliminary issue report on possibility to review all existing RPMs (in all gTLDs) and GNSO are deciding how to move forward taking into account parallel activities in (TMCH review, consumer trust and choice review, potential new gTLD subsequent rounds). Public comment hopes to get answers. - New gTLD subsequent rounds – An issue report (ie scoping the issues) has been published with a set of issues to determine if any policy changes are needed in order to accommodation a next round. Although there is a commitment from ICANN for another round, work relies also on a series of ICANN reviews currently underway: program implementation, rights protections, consumer survey, economic study, competition/consumer trust as well as security and stability. Registry Stakeholder group generally keen to see another round soon. - New gTLD auction proceeds – Discussion revolves more on process (how should the work develop) and less on substance on ‘how the funds should be spent. It’s felt a cross community working group might be the result, however some in GNSO suggest a GNSO working group would represent the community better. - Geo-TLD interest group are increasingly formalising their process with discussion on membership and fees. - GNSO formally state their support to the work of the CCWG Accountability. - There were two candidates for GNSO council chair were James Bladel and Heather Forrest, however due to insufficient votes to cross a threshold, the election did not pass and nominations will recommence at a later stage. The GNSO congratulated outgoing chair, Jonathon Robinson.
