Hello Chris,
I assume you were wondering what the motivation was for me submitting my name for consideration as an endorsed member of the upcoming ICANN SS&R AoC review team, so I thought I'd drop you a note to explain;
As you know I have been involved in ICANN from Jon Postel's days (pre- formal formation). And my key interest has been on the technical front, rather than process or political activities. Besides my ICANN NOMCOM terms, I have served on the SSAC for the last 7 years, and served a stint on the RSTEP.
Last year I was asked to head the ICANN SSAC review of the Security, Stability, and Resiliency plan developed by Greg Rattray. As a committee we were quite disturbed by part of the direction the plan hinted at, not the least of which was an apparent move by ICANN into a more operational role. We felt this was inappropriate, and not within ICANN's remit.
This concern was heightened earlier this year by the addition of the notion of a DNS CERT function that seemed to be leading towards significant ICANN involvement. I feel that it is certainly an area that ICANN should be concerned with, and perhaps might assist with, but it should not under any circumstances become a formal ICANN activity.
Given the direction that ICANN seems to be headed, I intend keeping as close an eye as possible on the focus of ICANN with respect to technical issues, and especially its movement into the operational arena. And I also want to ensure that it maintains a healthy focus on the cybersecurity challenges, without the use of scaremongering to create a false sense of need for ICANN to lead the charge if it is not appropriate. Involvement with the AoC review process seems like an important way in which I can be involved, and contribute.
Hopefully this provides some context for my application. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions - I am on East Coast (of the US ;-)) time through Thursday morning.
Regards Rodney
