Any updates? None 1. Participation UAC in ICANN82 community update Seda reached out to support staff regarding plans for ICANN82. Community update session, which includes UASG and UAC. if there any updates by March by UAC, option to have a slot for approx. 10 min. Bart: when? Seda: prep week Bart: would be a good opportunity to inform the broader community about the ICANN82 session, and invite them to attend Seda: yes Bart: does UAC want to participate in the prep week update to the broader community? Give a heads up about the Seattle session, and other work undertaken by UAC. Abdalmomen: yes. Stats about UA Day 2025 ccTLD contributions Bart: good suggestion. Seda: consultation UA readiness? Bart: part of the ccnso members meeting. Open to all with an interest in ccTLD-related matters. Abdalmomen: input from ccTLDs only Bart: difficult to ensure. All are welcome to attend. Public. If there are questions for ccTLDs only, good faith responses. 1. Invite Anil Jain to present on UA readiness report? Seda: suggestion by Anil. FY24 UA readiness report: https://uasg.tech/download/uasg-050-ua-readiness-report-fy24/ Abdalmomen: not just UA readiness. But also IDNs. Regina is an expert. She could share highlights. Regular session Bart: Anil is suggesting to explain the UASG report from last year. Correct? What he mentioned in IST? Seda: recent report from Sept-October. Bart: to combine with IDN World Report? Regina: Is there a new audience? We do not have the results of the new one yet. 1 year old already. Bart: to this group specifically. UAC Regina: principle of the data we are collecting, and what we are missing. Bart: indeed, as a counterpoint Abdalmomen: yes. Executive summary. To avoid overlap Bart: anil was suggesting to do this to UAC itself. Not yet to the broader community. Something for end January, early Feb? Abdalmomen: preference for start of Feb Action item #1 Seda to confirm plans with Anil. Target audience will be UAC. 5 Feb meeting, 14 UTC Abdalmomen: proposed workplan. At ICANN83, provide updates following Seattle. Also announce workshop by ICANN84. Referring to cooperation with UASG Bart: something to discuss with Anil when we meet with him in February. Abdalmomen: agree 3. Themes for the consultation on UA awareness/readiness Background material: compilation of reports and recent surveys on UA readiness (circulated two weeks ago as well) a. Format of consultation: i.Introduction ii.Introduction of drivers for UA readiness & consultation discussion iii.Introduction of blockers for UA readiness & consultation and discussion iv.Wrap-up and next steps Regina: looks good. Incentives = drivers? Bart: yes. Abdalmomen: we have some new members here today. Explain why we have this session. Start with a community update. Afterwards determine the next steps. 1. Identify themes to introduce drivers and blockers (preliminary driver: servicing language communities) Discussion and Mentimeter consultation
identify the one driver to be featured in a presentation/testimonial during the ICANN82 session
[cid:image001.png@01DB4BE5.CE1EF190] Masha: intention second poll? Bart: one testimonial. The UAC is planning the session. To prepare for the session, we need to identify the most compelling item to showcase. This poll helps us to identify the one single topic as a driver/motivation for ccTLDs. [cid:image002.png@01DB4BE5.CE1EF190] [cid:image003.png@01DB4BE5.CE1EF190] Abdalmomen: support digital transformation. All gvts went for this. How can their citizens go online? Regina: support to local communities. Typically it is one of the core missions or tasks of the ccTLD. Commercial interests come second. Something to quantify for the future? Team up with UASG regarding how many tlds are able to efficiently bring people online. I presented to international university students in Prague. Ladies from India said there are other barriers. Have arguments about the potential to change online access Masha: two ways to move with the consultation. Typical approach: local communities. But it is difficult. There is no great research about how the situation is in each country, with the use of local languages. In some countries EN, or ES as main languages. Use of local language, but use english for internet connection. In Armenia youngsters use english or russian language for the countries. Can be hard for this committee to present real info on the topic Another way for us to consider: increase IDN registrations. That is a business kpi. Bart: what if we would invite someone from unesco? They are very much into use of local languages. There is also an MoU between ICANN and UNESCO Masha: yes. Bart: if there is one organisation which we have easy access to, and which is relatively undisputed Regina: excellent. Good starting point for cooperation in this field. Plan to get some data. Bart: if they do not have data they can say so. Broadens the scope as well.
identify the one blocker to be featured in a presentation/testimonial during the ICANN82 session
Regina: missing the lack of demand. Bart: good point Masha: are the ones listed here the real blockers? Unwillingness. Not enough resources to spend time on UA implementation [cid:image004.png@01DB4BE5.CE1EF190] Vadim: what is the difference between tech limitations and software issues? Abdalmomen: tech limitations include for instance firewalls, or antispam. Software issues refer to when you already have AI’s, but difficulties to use with certain languages. Arabic for instance. Vadim: hardware issues vs software issues. Bart: impediments from UASG readiness survey. 96 individuals responded. * Other priorities (58%) * No need to support UA readiness (30%) * Lack of UA technical expertise (26%) * Critical 3rd Party supporting serrvices not UA ready, so not started (15%) * Critical 3rd party vendor is not UA ready, but systems are (11%) * Other (15%): Lack of demand * Political situation in region * No trust in open sources * Maintenace of EAI serrvers more manpwe Seda: Also <resistance from companies> sounds similar to <3rd party dependencies> Joke: Not necessarily. Maybe you rely on a third party (not necissarily a company) that cannot deliver for one reason or the other (resistance being only one reason)? Seda: I mean who are the companies that we are referring to resist here? Aren’t they 3rd parties who provide the software? If not, why do we depend on those companies? [cid:image005.png@01DB4BE5.CE1EF190] Bart: we can come back to this at the next meeting 1. Identify potential presenters Drivers: unesco Blockers: to be discussed at the next meeting 4. Next meetings 22 January 2025 5 February 2025 - with UASG chair as guest speaker 19 February 2025 ICANN82 (8-13 March 2025) 5. AOB Abdalmomen: session during IGF next week. Feel free to join. 6.
