There is huge potential for abuse with the new URS policy, particularly for charities that may have had domains registered for many years, and might not have the resources to survive without a functioning website.
The internet and the world wide web were founded on the (academic) principles of openness, freedom, and equality. (Berners-Lee made the Web available freely, with no patent and no royalties due.) Domains are the entry point to the net, and people and institutions treat them as such. The legacy gTLDs should not be commercialised like the new gTLDs as this goes against the principles of the web. Moreover, those who have already registered legacy TLDs did so on the assumption that the prices would not suddenly increase.
This is a change that will not affect large and rich institutions, but will affect small charities and individuals, and possibly the academics and academic institutions that first brought the net into being. This undermining the nature of the net and heading down a path that destroys net neutrality.
