A increase will definitely make me shop around. I ave 3 domain names I want to protect but none are actively used. Prices should go down for this and not up. How much actual work is being done with my parked domain to justify an increase? None, that's how much. Dynodot should fight against the increase instead of passing it on to faithful customers. [13:21] Schtearn Randomizations Domain names going up at 7% per year is ridiculous - here is my comment: Hi there, I have read some other comments, and the following one, for example is very much in the spirit of public reaction to such a change. “Hello, I am writing to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. Despite there clearly being potential financial gains to be had by raising the registration fee on .com domains, the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. While price hikes such as this likely won't mean much to the larger business concerns that buy in bulk, it will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. At worst, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal. I currently own many domain names which I have owned for several years. I own my own name for personal website as well as names for my freelance consulting business. I am totally against this Amendment that allows Verisign to increase prices up to 7% per year for the next 4 years. Verisign was already given a monopoly position with regard to the .com registry and permitted to charge $7.85 per domain. Exactly what service do t777777hey provide for this service? In 2019 Verisign had gross revenue of $1.2 billion and a net profit of over $600 million. That's a 50% net profit margin. I must say, not bad. They are doing just fine without this raise in prices. The internet is a public good and this should be kept in mind when determining what a for-profit company who is in a monopoly position is allowed to charge for its services. While I do believe Verisign should be allowed to make a profit since that is why they are in business and enables them to provide a quality service, I also believe that in this case a 50% net profit is more than fair for providing a service that is a public good. What other industry that provides a public good has that high a margin? Also, what other regulated industry is permitted to raise its prices up to 28% over a six year time period, especially since inflation is so low now and likely to stay this way for a while? Allowing Verisign to raise its prices at the expense of the people and in opposition to the public good is just a corporate give-away. As someone who has been managing servers on the public Internet since 1995, and as someone who maintains public DNS servers for a variety of domains, and as someone who understands the costs associated maintaining TLD and root DNS servers, and as someone who remembers the cost of .COM domain registration in 1995 ($35/year/domain), I do not question the need for price adjustments over time. I question the 7% value. There is no indication as to how that value was decided upon. I would like to see justification for that amount. The amount _may_ be justified, but there is insufficient information available to draw that conclusion. Having seen very large and rapid increases in registration cost for other TLDs ( .HOSTING and .HAUS specifically ), I think it is critically important that one of the earliest TLDs ( .COM ) not suffer such rapid cost increases, so I am in favor of a relatively small year to year increase rate consistent with coverage of operating costs. I have seen other comments about keeping domain registration costs reasonable for individuals, that is part of what the large expansion of TLDs was supposed to accomplish. Looking at my registrar, I see plenty of options for TLDs that renew for under US$20, which seems reasonable to me for an individual. Thank you for considering my comments.
