I use the Internet but I am not a .com registrant. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. I am strongly opposed to the proposed price increase to .COM domains. The following entry is from ICANN's website- "ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with participants from all over the world dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable." ICANN is supposed to operate for the public benefit. I don't believe this policy would fall under "public benefit". There is no financial justification to raise the price. It is simply because they can. Advancements in technology are driving the cost of operating a registry down, yet domain prices keep going up for registrants. Verisign is merely the manager, not the owner, of the .COM Registry. It is allowed to operate the extension by contract and should have no role in setting the price. There is no "public benefit" justification to these changes. It is simply a handout to a company with a de facto monopoly at the expense of registrants. This is on the heels of the .ORG contract debacle where ICANN ignored the overwhelming public sentiment against it, and moved forward in removing price caps. Now we also have the pending .ORG sale to a private equity company which involves several former ICANN leaders and connected parties. It is an injustice passing this bill that allows annual increases on domains. This basic service is a necessity to conduct business. Find another avenue of making money off of a business necessity. The small business owner has enough on their plate without you justifying an increase in cost to something that should be kept at a minimal cost. The thoughts of annual increase is robbery. I oppose the amendment allowing annual price increases on .com domains. Price increases should only occur when adjusted for inflation. Many who are not profit making businesses use the .com domain because it is the most popular domain name. Our organization has a .com domain for that very reason. I strongly oppose a .com price increase. It would hurt my business as a domain name investor and upset the domain name industry at large. Part of the .com attraction is the stable, reasonable price. It will hurt Verisign's business if they try to raise the price. It will encourage and give credence to the new gtld's, and change the public mind set to start using other extensions, thus breaking .com's grip as the most popular extension. The fact is, that no one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices; the current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Please remember that Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. On the contrary, ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest.
