Dear ICANN, As an IT consultant and small business owner, I was very disturbed to hear about the proposals for large price increases to the charge for .com domains that are being proposed. I understand that .COM wholesale domain prices could grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The whole world uses .com domains, including our own business and many businesses that we support. I can see no justification for an increase on this scale. It would appear to be a stitch up between yourselves and Verisign to enrich both organisations, no doubt to pay even higher executive salaries. The internet is a vital tool for the world, not just USA, and price increases on this scale will be damaging. I ask you to reconsider. Hi to whom it may concern I am a bit unhappy to hear that you have done a deal with Verisign to increase .com domains The security system is already awash with complicated overcharging and this can only make matters worse. You should be concentrating on working a security solution with governments who have a vested interest in our safety These companies are only out to take market share and make more money almost any Tom Dick or Harry can become an authorised security certificate provider all with the same money making interests that includes Verisign and will not improve anything other than your bank balances at a cost to the small website owner whom are already swamped with IT issues and struggles to run a legitimate business . The recent upgrades made by google Microsoft and safari etc caused my legitimate website to be taken down which had purchased certificates. I am sick of this behind closed doors attitude to SCREW the small business mans interest by clowns who do not have a clue how difficult all this is as they are part of the big IT picture and get paid MORE to cause problems. My website should be mine and I should be able to purchase it outright also the security certificates should be linked to a licenced government register of IT businesses, nobody should be able to redirect or close my site down without government agreement. As a business man of 40 years standing I understand the need for profit however I also understand when systems are deliberately being made complicate to screw money out of us . Where I believe in the freedom of the internet I will continue to push for more government control of these systems so as to establish a proper legitimate safety system that is robust and open for all and this new move between yourselves and Verisign is a classic example of abuse behind the scenes Also being forced to agree policies that allow IT infrastructure AND SOFTWARE to watch and eavesdrop on us so we can be target with emails that cut out proper competition leading to overpricing and monopolising is an affront to both democracy and free markets alike. In return, see how you can help internet more. Increasing prices only push consumers to other tlds and then what next? Increase their price too? Pushing toward that direction will create new opportunities for alternatives like having country level tlds that mostly operated by governments therefore taking part in reducing privacy and consumer rights. We are demanding justice. .Com domains are what makes internet accessible and therefore needs to stay accessible! Don't increase the prices! Otherwise the market will take a huge hit, leading it into a change of direction towards Monopoly businesses and probably loosing a lot of people to other solutions for their businesses etc.. Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. What does this change mean? Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. Why is ICANN doing this? Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. I am contacting you to object to the proposed changed to the .COM Registry Agreement. Firstly, I believe that there has been insufficient consultation on these changes. Secondly, I don't believe there has been enough transparency about the relationship with Verisign and how that affects these changes. There needs to be more clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. Thirdly, I believe these changes will drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody - which flies in the face of the founding principle of the web.
