It seems these increases will cripple a lot of new .coms and stop the growth of the business which is needed to have strong economies. I for one am against these increases. It is hard enough to get started in this time and age with all the increase and regulations put forth by the so-called regulators and policy elites. I find the upcoming changes in the new deal between Verisign and ICANN is wrong. Important big decisions like this wich will affect millions of internet users should not be down to only two companies to decide. The internet consumers, both users and the industry as a whole should be listened to in big important deals like this. In many countries there are competion rules that wouldnt allow near monopolies like this being created. Running a domain registry is like running a public utility - such a company should be able to make a steady profit but operates for the common, public interest. Verisign is clearly able to provide their services and still make a reasonable profit at the current price-per-domain. A 7% per year increase in domain pricing is not in the public interest and will only slow continued growth of the Internet and adversely affect smaller domain holders. A quick search of COLA values across US government and private sector reports shows anywhere from 1.5% to 2% (1.6% for social security), so any increase to the .com registry costs should be limited to no more than 2%. ________________________ Michael Sweet

It risks dissuading people from domain name purchases. Perhaps if Verisign is unable to operate efficiently enough to fund ICANN adequately, ICANN can bid out .com management in a manner than explicitly funds a $20m initiative? Or simply fund-raise, like other non-profits? Considering there are large internet infrastructures companies (CloudFront is an example) that are able to offer DNS services at-cost, I can see no legitimate justification for a price increase. The $20m kickback, a fraction of what Verisign stands to make, is reprehensible.

Hello, I would like to voice my opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. I believe that the global DNS registration system should be run primarily as a public concern. The only entities that stand to benefit from the proposed arrangement are verisign itself, at the expense of the public. These price hikes will impact the millions of small, independent businesses and developers that rely on the system as is to make their livelihood. Further, this could prove yet another point of pressure that convinces a small business to make their online presence exclusively in the Facebook walled garden and eschew the web itself. The web, and global DNS, were envisioned to be run for the public good, and they SHOULD be run for the public good. Deals such as this are an abdication of that mandate; short sighted profit chasing at the expense of all else. Please do not adopt this proposal. To whom it may concern, I am very surprised to know that a private entity has monopoly over .com pricing. I am also very surprised to hear the reasoning provided: “in line with policy priorities of the Trump Administration.”. I am assuming this is a poorly phrased or misquoted statement, because the department should prioritise public/national interest above all else. Of course, the final domain pricing is not currently regulated. This is not ideal, but it was not a big deal until now. This is about to change. The department needs to have a plan to mitigate the final pricing of domains so that this proposed price hike does not affect the public and small business owners. Otherwise, I am afraid this will hurt small businesses. Many small businesses might have no choice but to resort to foreign alternatives. They will have to migrate to new domains, a process that will almost certainly confuse and mislead customers as well. I hope the department has done the necessary auditing and will take immediate steps to regulate the final pricing. I chose .com as my domain because I trusted the US system. I object to the idea that .com prices woudl be raise as I do not think the cost is warranted and it makes it harder for those who have less to start their own website. I'm not saying it out of an obvious desire to merely save money but internet, as we know it is free medium and the price increase means fewer .com registrations per year and this especially impacts people in developing countries where the currency value is really low and the need for information technology and a "free medium" for spread of information is high (free from government interference). Dear ICANN representatives, I am very concerned about the changes in the contract between ICANN and Verisign and about the creation of this contract. It does not seem to me to be an appropriate way of proceeding for an institution committed to the free Internet. Non-transparent negotiations and large payments not bound to a specific purpose (here $20,000,000!) have the potential to cause irreparable damage to trust. Furthermore, domain names are an integral part of the free internet and especially .COM domains are an important basis for small and medium sized companies, self-employed persons and start-ups all over the world to participate in the free, worldwide traffic of goods and services. - And this is not the only, but in my opinion the most important innovation that has been made possible by the Internet. There is no question that all parties should benefit from this traffic. A drastic price increase over a long period of time, however, has the potential to permanently destroy the Internet as we know it and its possibilities for participation - and what will remain, as always, is us, who have the majority of all privileges on our side anyway. I ask that you please not raise the price or sell the rights to another organization, and that the TLD be managed in a fair manner that grants access (through a reasonable price ceiling) to both individuals who are just getting off the ground as well as corporations with sizeable budgets. Dear Sir/Madam, I am extremely concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement. Self employed people, charities and tiny sturtups. will find this a huge burden that could render the internet only accessible to medium and large corporations, therefore undemocratic. If this had been the way from the beginning of the internet, this would have been just the way it is, but, to start enforcing it today is not acceptable. Keep domains accessible to individuals and small businesses. Thank you

I am a registrant of a .com domain name and against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. This is extremely hard on small business owners like myself. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. ICANN is supposed to govern the domain name system in the public interest. Sent from my iPad

To Whom It Concerns, I’ve just become aware of ICANN’s close-door agreement to allow raises in the cost of .COM domain registration fees for 7 out of upcoming 10 years. I am opposed to this deal, as it violates the spirit of ICANN’s mission and purpose. As a domain holder and internet user, I strongly believe that handing more control to Verisign (both through increasing prices, and allowing Verisign to act as a Registrar) threatens the integrity of the internet.
