ICANN has a monopoly on .com domains and they are administered by Verisign with no competition. Allowing Verisign to raise prices is only going to have only one outcome — prices will increase at the maximum rate allowed by the agreement. That’s going to make Verisign a ton of money in exchange for a paltry $20 million that will go to benefit the community at large. Either create some competition by allowing a bunch (e.g. 5-10) of players to compete with Verisign for the administration business on an on-going basis (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc have a choice between Verisign, Player B, Player C, etc so they can’t just jack up prices), or setup a system where prices stay flat year over year (so Verisign has an incentive to increase efficiency). I am a young musician with a recent .com website. I am only making enough money to pay so many expenses. Musicians and other artists don't make a lot of money most of the time. Did you know that musicians are paid the same for live performances that they were paid in the 1980s sometimes less. But without a .com site nobody will find me as the other endings are not memorable or respected in the same way. The internet should be a place where people can share there work, ideas, and products without heavy taxation. Everything else will go up if you raise .com prices. Dear Madam, or Sir, I am concerned about this amendment to the Registry Agreement because it will affect, not just me, but any individual who would like their own domain name. I am 100% sure that no corporation will object to the 28% cost increase every six years as they earn money off their domain name and paying almost any amount would be acceptable to them. However, there are a great deal of small businesses that would see this as a burden as well as individual users out there that have purchased their own domain name and are using it for personal use, not commercial use. Several of us have multiple domain names, if for no other reason than to protect our own names from being used to run a website. I personally have about 4 that I use to protect myself and my family while also allowing my child to be able to have a domain name that is exclusively theirs. I understand it would be extremely difficult for you to create a regulation that would charge businesses more and individuals less, however, that may be what is required at this time. This would leave a loophole for businesses to have an individual register their domain name, however, no corporation of any size will be willing to leave their domain names in private hands. This would also allow fledgling businesses (aka startups) to keep their costs low at first. Remember, many businesses have been started in individual's garages. You may also assume that all ".com" domain names are used for, or are supposed to be used for commercial purposes, however, this is not the case today. If this had been defined and enforced from the beginning of the internet, this would be a non-issue, however, to start enforcing it today would cause many many individuals to lose their domains. Yes, there are other top level domains they can move to, however, that doesn't alleviate the fact that they would be losing an asset they had invested much time, money, and resources acquiring. Please keep the annual fee very low or consider a more flexible charging system for the .COM top level domain that will keep it accessible to individuals and small businesses. Thank you, Vinod Nair

I've had a small website for the past 10 years to share photos. I'm hoping one day I will be able to use the URL for a real business, but right now I'm not making any money off of it, so if .com prices increase it will be hard to justify continuing to holding onto it. I'd be more likely to just move everything to a Facebook page. As a nonprofit with global stewardship over one of the most valuable resources of our time, I hope that ICANN will consider the small voices of the internet and protect affordable .com URLs for the small voices of the internet.

To Whom It May Concern, I’m submitting my comment against the proposed amendments to the .com registry agreement: 1) ICANN and Verisign made these changes in secret without input from the public. 2) A 70% price increase over the next 10 years with no public input. 3) The amendment proposes Verisgn pay ICANN an additional $20 million. There is no oversight for how ICANN will spend this money. 4) Unfair business practices - the ICANN rules is that the operator of a TLD can’t also be a domain name registrar. To whom it may concern, We understand the need to have price increase due to inflation and reinvestment on infrastructure. However, the issue is that as a non-profit organization (ICANN), it shall not have no transparencies on how the funds it receive from Verisign will be used. A deal behind a closed door is against the free market spirit and certainly carry distrust from the community. Furthermore, the monopoly deal that ICANN has with Verisign is also against many of the principles for a fair and free trade economy, and the Internet as a whole that affects many businesses. The world is full of greed and so is the internet. But to this point there has still been some equality around how things work in the web. Even regular people have been able to afford and express their opinions and express themselves on .com domains. What do you think will happen, if Verisign is allowed to increase .com domain prices by 7 % annually (with some exeptions)? Little by little only huge corporations can afford the holy grail of domains and all the little people will suffer. The world would become a better place for later generations if we would plant trees. This action can be compared to destroying a rain forest. At 7% the .com domain prices will double roughly every ten years. With this logic in 100 years you need to multiply the current price by 1024. In 200 years you need to multiply it by 1 048 576. That's doubling only twenty times. This may seem far fetched but this is exactly the perspective you need to be thinking in. And this is exactly what will happen. Every time greed today triumphs long term best option, the people will suffer. I hope you can live with the decision that many will suffer because you were greedy. But I guess that you still have the option to make things right. You should consider taking the opportunity.

I recently learned the intent to increase the prices of .com domain registrations. As a small business owner, who is a 1-person show, it is unacceptable to me that such price increases would take effect - especially for those of us who are small business owners and/or operate a personal website or blog. The affordability of having a domain registered, something that is critical for the success of any enterprise in today's Internet world, is becoming less realistic. The .com domain is still the basic standard by which people search for websites, and to create a system where it is out of the reach for everyone except those with thick pocketbooks is unacceptable and only demonstrates a ridiculous level of greed. Honestly, the cost set for simply availing itself of a non-Cost of Goods service such as Domain Name Registration is high enough. When there is such a monopolistic service, we need to be vigilant about who/how those prices should be changed. There is no needï¿½and it's a TRAVESTY to allowï¿½a change in the whole sale price of .COM domain registration. Unless there is a public accounting on the INCOME and PROFIT associated with the .COM domain registration process and an OPEN BID option, with guidelines like a typical RFP that allows any company access to that revenue, then the pricing should stay as is. Hello ICANN, As an Internet-focused MSP that manages hundreds of customers servers and thousands of domains I am extremely concerned by this proposal and the limited number of parties that came up with it -- namely Verisign and ICANN. This proposal represents, in my view, a catastrophic weakening of the rules designed to keep the domain system fair and affordable. I remember in the early 1990s when domains were hundreds of dollars per year to register simply because ONE company had a stranglehold on it (Network Solutions). Returning to this kind of absurd price gouging is not what the Internet needs in 2020. Especially when there is no clarify on where this money will be directed to and how it will be managed. Any change like this needs to come from a broad discussion, not just ICANN and Verisgn. Our entire industry and by extensions our customers will be affected by this. To whom it may concern, As a business owner, and domain registrant since 1995, I support not only the proposed price increases, but would in fact encourage a significantly larger increase and much more rapidly - to the extent of an order of magnitude increase. I feel this would give large and immediate gains for the entire Internet and directly address some issues the DNS is seeing (and part of the reason for the proposal) by drastically reducing the load as superfluous registrations would be dropped, and likely the additional funding would more than offset such a drop in the load. It has recently come to my attention that ICANN has concluded a deal, without public oversight or advance comment, with Verisign Inc., allowing it to raise .com registration rates to wholesalers over the coming years. In exchange for this fee increase approval, ICANN accepted a $20 million dollar payment for purposes unknown. Aside from simple greed, there are no particularly valid reasons for allowing price increases in .com. Aside from bureaucratic self indulgence, there is no particular need for ICANN to receive $20 million of Internet Users' funds, simply because they can extract it in exchange for granting price increases. Neither Verisign nor ICANN have much to do with the success of the Internet, which has been brought about by users, and, if history is any indicator, that reducing prices for TLD registrations is a better way to go than increasing prices. Verisign has more than ample revenue from its Internet related activities. It should be forced to "make do" as should ICANN. Situations like these remind me of the bribery scandals involved with the Salt Lake City Olympics and the USOC. Perhaps the press should investigate and bring what they find into the light. Change ICANN's position and deny any price increases to Verisign.

As the owner and manager of multiple domain names (currently around 150) I have huge concerns over the proposed increases in the cost of domain registration. Extrapolated across the board for others like myself, it makes for a massive increase in costs that far exceeds inflation. That there should be a small increase to the cost of domain ownership is reasonable, that these should build without reference, year on year for the foreseeable future is tantamount to unfair practice and will certainly impact on the various projects I have on hand and will force me to close many. Please reconsider. You are pushing out hobbyists, those with personal websites and low budget web-designers - which is (or possibly as a result of these proposed changes "was") a large percentage of your customer base. According to Internet Live Stats - although there are 1.7 billion websites on the internet, only 200 million are currently active. Dear Sir/Madam, I have learned via online research that ICANN intends to increase by over 70% the price of the .com TLD. I am writing this email to formerly object to this intention. The price of TLDs is already very high compared to the relative data storage cost for the period of 1 Year. Choosing to nearly double the cost of such TLDs simply because Verisign have essentially offered your organisation a $20 million dollar bribe is irresponsible. There is already a vast trend of domain name squatting, where vendors will automatically scoop up domains simply for the potential to resell them in the future. This behaviour has, and continues to, bias domain ownership in favour of the rich, and prevent fledgling businesses or other potential domain owners from having equal accessibility to the domain namespace. As a software engineer and web domain owner, I understand how automated the process of domain name registration & ownership is. While human-occupied jobs do exist within this realm, such as those working for top-level DNS providers and security firewalls for top-level DDOS protection and the like, the majority of the process of registering and managing domain names is performed and maintained by software agents. Therefore I do not see justification in such a hefty and spontaneous price hike, especially when money exchanging hands between your organisation and Verisign is involved. Please do not follow the monopolistic behaviour of companies like AT&T, Comcast or Verizon. The reason inequality is rife in America is due to rich-favouring tactics like these companies demonstrate. To follow suit by accepting the Verisign bribe simply to hike prices for the end consumer would be disastrous for the future of equality of domain accessibility. Please instead focus on setting a healthier and kinder example of encouraging equality, by redirecting your efforts to instead deconstruct and prevent domain squatting, or automated & exhaustive automated domain purchasing. This would help ensure that TLDs remain available and accessible to every person with such interest, rather than exclusively favouring the wealthy and supporting their ongoing land-grab in this arena. I am a domainer (I invest in domain names as a business). I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. Realistically the value of a .com domain has DECREASED over the years. There are a ton of new tlds that are just as good. If the price of .com domains increase I would be just fine chosing another tld and supporting decentralized dns options

Hi, I am vehemently disappointed to hear about the potential .com price increase. This is downright unjust, unreasonable, and illogical. It is enough that we as consumers need to worry about the 100 plus expenses that go up every year. The potential price increase for .com domains is no different than a potential taxation on air. That's how stupid this deal is. There is no legitimate or sound reason why we as the consumers should pay for this. If anything, why increase it every year freeze it for two and then restart that vicious cycle over and over and over again? This to me is worse than a Ponzi or pyramid scheme. It is a scheme built on greed. I will not rest my case until this proposed amendment gets washed away in the sewers where it belongs in perpetuity. All my best, Joe

As a hobbyist developer and side hustle entrepreneur, I have loved the freedom of being able to publish sites online and to represent those sites with the nearly universal .com domain. It's as classic as the internet and price increases will make it increasingly challenging to turn startup ideas into the next big thing. I'm also concerned about the lack of transparency into who exactly the price increases stand to benefit and am fearful that these extra fees will wind up in lobbyist pockets. Thanks, Lewis
