As a business owner, I understand that it is important to be able to stay in business and charge a reasonable rate for the services that we offer. While I can understand raising rates, the amount the rate rises is my concern. It has been stated that you’ll be able to raise rates as much as 70%. Now, if I was going to be getting SOMETHING for that extra 70% then maybe, but that’s not the case here. Are we getting upgraded services, better security, stronger infrastructure, anything? I sincerely doubt it. If I was to increase my costs by 70% to my customers, I’d be out of business pretty quickly. I hope the same occurs for you if you decided to move forward with this. Also, I hope someone runs your greedy ass over and then backs up and runs you over again, and then does it 70 more times.

Giving them the go-ahead to increase pricing on .com TLD's in exchange for money invested in ICANN is reprehensible. As a web developer whose clients will be negatively impacted by your agreement, I am appalled. You should be focused on serving the end-user, not on the profits of a huge corporation. Shame on you! I recently learned about a proposed Amendment 3 that would significantly impact .COM domains. I am writing to voice my *opposition* to the proposal. First, a proposed increase of 7% each of 8 out of 10 years is over and above the rate of inflation and completely unreasonable. If a price increase is necessary it should be tied to the inflation rate; a more rational and reasonable increase. Furthermore, ICANN and/or Verisign should provide a justification for the need to increase prices. Second, the report that ICANN will receive a $20 million payment from Verisign is concerning. There has been no explanation of why this payment is being made (sounds a lot like a bribe) or how the additional revenue will be used by ICANN. ICANN is mandated to operate "in the public interest"; this seems only to be in the interest of ICANN and Verisign. Third, allowing Verisign to act as a domain registrar is a conflict of interest since they are an operator of a TLD. Verisign should either be an operator or a registrar. To allow the company to function in both sectors sets up the significant possibility of abuse of power and the potential for a monopoly or near monopoly. This is counter to the mandate of ICANN to govern the domain name system "in the public interest". I urge ICANN to put "the public interest" first and reject this proposal. Scott Geiger

Please do not raise the prices of .COM domains! Many people that use them are small businesses that are just trying to participate on a level playing field. They don't have the money big business do like Coca Cola or Home Depot. We already have plenty of stuff against us like the astronomical expense of shorter domains or acronyms of our business name. If we can't afford to own .COM's and reap the benefits TLD's enjoy in search results then that's just one more nail in the coffin of the little guy. We are also begging you to not allow Verisign operate as a registrar. Please continue to be one of the last forces in place that protect the little guy. I am appalled that Verisign may be granted the ability to dramatically increase .com registration/renewal prices as part of its new ICANN contract. This TLD is simply too important and affects too many people to bear such increases. I registered my first domain — a .com domain, of course — when the web was still new, over 25 years ago. Many other people, including moms and working-class individuals, have registered their own domains over that time period. The .com TLD is part of our collective heritage, one that should not be saddled with these onerous and unwarranted price increases. Dear ICANN, I've been informed that ICANN is slated to accept $20 million additional dollars from Versign to continue service registrations. This could lead to 70% higher fees and such potential for mass expense to teh public requires disclosure of the purpose of the additional funding. Absent such explanations, it may be necessary to pursue regulation through the FTC, FCC or other authorities to ensure that public access to what amounts to public space is not exploited without oversight. Until now, this has been deemed unnecessary, but the most recent change proposal opens possibilities to consumer exploitation and restriction of trade. This will not be well received among honest governance bodies and may lead to unwelcome administrative costs to Verisgn, ICANN, and vendors increasing expenses that benefit no one at all. These costs should not be weighed positively against the current system, so I implore Verisign and ICANN to tighten the parameters of the contract to head off potential misuse and looking to domain registrations as a lucrative source of profit. The backlash will be fierce. The internet is a place where bad press can be abundant and swift. I'm a stake-holder as a registered .com site-owner, so I would like my small say in what you charge for my site, which is personal and makes no money. I can, sort of, understand the need to raise rates at times. But how much do you need to make? Everyone wants to be on the 'net. I can't therefore, understand how you folks aren't making enough money under the current rules? I'm against your proposal. It basically says "screw you" to all of your millions of users. I just heard about the secret contract ICANN has with verisign behind closed doors whereby verisign is going to support your initiatives but no one knows what those initiatives are. I as a internet user who owns multiple .com domains on my clients behalf will be impacted by the increase in price. I would happily support your initiatives provided that their long term outcome is worth the high price. However, finding myself in circumstances where I don't know what those initiatives are, I am highly sceptical of that. Therefore, I hereby leave a comment against such increase in prices and I will never opt for secret initiatives or closed door contracts where the opinion of the majority is ignored. Regards

Hello, This proposal of increasing the domain name cost is not ideal for most of the registrars (including me) as the gradual price hike already made it costly in last few years. Now, increasing the cost in 8 out of 10 years is not acceptable. It will force users to think twice before paying that much price. Ideally a gradual increase can be done in 2 to 3 years, but regular increase does not make any sense. My appeal is to not to disturb the current price structure. My favorite feature of the internet is that it levels the playing field. Once online, a single person can create a web presence that rivals even the biggest corporation's web presence, and for fairly cheaply. This presents all kinds of opportunities for people - with enough effort, a person can get onto the internet and build something interesting. A crucial part of this is having a memorable domain name, and the .com domain is easily the most popular and easy to remember. Allowing this new price-increase plan will shut out entrepreneurs. A lot of the newer generic gTLDs are prohibitively expensive, shutting out people who may not have a lot of money but have a great idea. Verisign is the sole-source supplier of .COM domain names at the wholesale level, giving them an effective monopoly. Verisign charges $7.85 per year to register or renew a .COM domain name each year. Verisign’s costs are estimated at between $2.50 to $2.90 per domain name per year. Everything above that is pure profit. Verisign already enjoys one of the highest profit margins of any company in the world. A further price increase is not justified. Hi, Even though prices for .com websites will increase, this does not guarantee that more profit will be made by increasing the price for .com websites. Most websites must rely on email list to gain customers. If a brand has loyal customers, and the bran losses its .com status, the new owners of the website address do not automatically have access to email list that was gathered by the previous user. Also, the new website user does not automatically have access to social media feeds which may be associated with a website that has a popular or well known brand name. As a non-profit organization, ICANN should NOT be allowing Top Level Domain operators to also be Domain Registrars. This is a clear Conflict of Interest and should never be allowed to occur. As such, the new contract with yearly rate-cap increases should also not be allowed.

I recently received an email from my domain host bringing to attention the sudden increase in prices for .COM sites done with little regard to customers who pay to have .COM sites running. Price increases might be fine for companies that receive a lot of income but for small one person hosts, increases can add up quickly. If you consider doing things like this, the least that can be done is to consult the people that will be truly affected by this change and allow them to have a choice/voice in the matter.

As a customer with so many domains across many registers, we have to strongly agree with NameCheap.com <http://namecheap.com/> and we support the position NameCheap.com <http://namecheap.com/> has taken, higher prices affects everyone and especially people that less well off and poor, if anything we say reduce the price of the .com and provide more support and margins for domain registers so that they have room to offer discounts to clients. Higher prices will have a strong and significant impact on the growth of the .com domains and make it less affordable to the end-user. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price. The claim is that money will be spent on enhancing the technology available, that I understand, but isn’t the money coming now enough for doing whatever enhancements and upgrades. Yes I’m sure the big companies won’t mind a price increase, but for the average guy or small business, whom you should be supporting and thinking of first, this is a deal breaker. People and small businesses do take these small fees into consideration when planning an online venture. Don’t be greedy and keep the web more accessible to the masses rather than working to make it less accessible. Thanks

It is unacceptable for ICANN to sign contracts with Verisign behind closed doors that affect Internet/.COM domain users. It is not in the best interest of the public when decisions are made in private that affect the general public. I humbly request that the vera sign contract details be made public. Also, if ICANN Can provide additional details about the extra $20 million that Verisign will give to ICANN in terms of the purpose of the extra funds and how it will be used by ICANN to improve the infrastructure. These price increases that are planned with out a democratic audience seem a bit out of place in today’s society. It also seems like greed and arrogance are in the way. This isn’t supply and demand, this is 2 business being assholes because they can. Domains should be for all to weigh in on. It isn’t ICANN or Verisign’s invention that was copyrighted and trademarked to sell, no it’s a digital means that the entire population has buy in on. The domains need better structure and support, leading the rest of the World Wide Web into a great cyber future. Regulating prices and how they are governed is a far better solution that will advantageously impact the Internet for years to come. Greetings, I run a small web design and hosting business in Killeen Texas, USA and am concerned about potential price increase for .COM. Web design and hosting has become such a low margin activity in this day and age even slight increases puts at risk the clients desire to outsource or keep in house to keep costs low. Small incremental increases to keep up with costs is one thing but the information I have read appears that you can charge up to 70% higher in under 10 years seems astronomical. I request that you work with the internet users, not just those who can enrich themselves, and be very transparent.
