Good morning, I find it appalling that none of us in the startup and internet community were consulted about these price changes and new deal with Verisign. Young companies across the globe depend on the .com TLD to access international markets and legitimize their businesses. We are not seeing the same traction and prestige with other TLDs, and therefore .com is the only choice for properly positioning our businesses. Such price increases may seem small in your context, but already the domains are expensive to users across the globe. If you convert the price to Indian rupees, South African Rands or Kenyan Shillings, you’ll find that this price increase will put strain on young entrepreneurs trying to establish themselves. Entrepreneurship is the backbone of this globalized economy, and your plans will harm that. I would not have been able to start and grow my first two businesses at age 23 without affordable access to .com TLDs, and I am certain that a price increase will hamstring young entrepreneurs with very few resources like myself. I urge you to reconsider this change and to implement a process for discussion with all companies, stakeholders and users in the domain service sphere. To whom it may concern, I am the owner of a number of .com domains, including one that dates back to the origins of the Internet (it is in the top 50 oldest continuously held domain names). Thus, I am thoroughly familiar with the history of the Domain Name System, ICANN, and domain pricing. The current proposal to increase .com prices is unsupported by either history or economics. It is also unsupported by any director indirect customer of domain wholesalers. Furthermore, the amount of the increase is utterly unreasonable. Inflation is currently running at around 1.5-2% per year, and has been at that low level for the past several years. Thus, it is absurd to suggest annual increases of 7%, far above the inflation rate. ICANN and Verisign have offered zero evidence to suggest that their per-domain costs have increased at all, let alone at such an inflated rate. Verisign has a monopoly on the .com top-level domain. If unrestrained, it will unquestionably use its monopoly power to raise prices arbitarily. It is ICANN's job to prevent such monopolistic behavior; if ICANN fails in its duty, it is certain that the government will eventually step in. Verisign's contract should be renegotiated so that price increases are limited to more than the general inflation rate. Dear ICANN, I highly appreciated ICANN taking over the domain registry from Network Solutions. Please, continue to provide the same domain services around the world for a fair price to the consumer. I currently own around 20 domains that have provided me with many different opportunities. However, due to search algorithms and the sheer amount of work involved, it’s often more efficient and cost effective to use other resources to obtain customers. I spend around $300 a year on domain service. It would be highly unfortunate if using the internet to promote businesses became a much less effective, more expensive, and less productive way to reach customers than purchasing data. I am opposed to this agreement, and if takes place I would request that the US Department of Justice and the European Union investigate this for collusion to violate antitrust laws by giving control of .com domains wholesale pricing to only one company for a payment of $20 million that will result in repeated price increases with no competition.

As a long time owner of multiple .com domain names, I am completely against the proposed amendment. There is no valid justification for the proposed price increase. US inflation since 2012 is 11%, so this proposed raise of 30% is nearly 3 times inflation. Further, the real costs of operating a network service will have actually decreased in that time, due to improved technology and economies of scale, therefore this proposal is completely unjustifiable and must not go ahead. Greetings, I am writing to voice my opposition to the proposed amendment that would allow Verisign the ability to further abuse consumers, and generally cause harm to the Internet naming system. I am a web consultant, and developer. I routinely purchase domains for clients, and manage quite a few domains on clients behalf. Allowing Verisign to implement rampant price increases over such a long period of time has the potential to cause chaos, and harm to businesses that have diligently built brands around names that they purchased with the expectation that they would be able to keep those names as long as they maintained registration at a predictable, and stable price. Such a precedent has been set over the course of multiple decades now. Verisign has proven not to be a worthy custodian of consumers interest, and only interested in what is good for themselves. This is a dangerous position when they control the literal life of navigation on the Internet, a global entity. I urge ICANN to please reconsider this possibility, and allow the voices of the global community to be heard and considered on this matter. I am in favour of price control and against the 7% increase in domain fees. I would also like to see some transparency as to the $20 million for "security and stability" of the domain name system. Whose security and what is exactly being stabilized? I am against Verisign becoming a domain registrar. This would result in reduction of domain registrars and allow Verisign to dominate the market at once and push through changes, rules and price hikes hurting consumers. Dear ICANN, I find it rather disturbing how an organization dedicated to the management and well-being of the internet can negotiate such self-serving terms. Having done so in isolation, ignoring general feedback and doing such unilaterally is a threat to the affordability of the internet and its so important .com domain. Given those domains have for so many built the backbone of the internet, you’ll find not just large cooperations in possession of them but also smallest businesses and even private households. If you want to do right, you must not only be transparent with regards to how those additional funds are used but also drastically limit the cost increases. This e.g. by limiting the amount of increase to 10% over the next 10 years and demanding old domains are protected even further than new ones. With that you allow the founding participants in building the internet to be protected from unsustainable increases, which in essence was one of the core duties of ICANN to regulate and protect the internet and its structure. cHi, I run a small friends-and-family email and web server. I'm small potatoes compared to your average domain customer. One of my clients is a friend that is a brand-new author with a book recently published. It doesn't earn her very much money yet. I don't ask her to pay...I wait for her to pay what she can. Another is a retiree living in a retirement village in Arizona. He's part of a computer group that's hosted and run by the village. I host his site and the group's site — the same for them. I let them pay me when they can. I am reasonably sure there are millions and millions of "small potatoes" guys like me that would have to make other choices if our .com domains became too expensive. A modest increase would be excellent, but having a single company in charge of all .com prices. Well, I smell the possibility of government-imposed deregulation on the horizon. Like the railroads, airlines, telephone companies, etc. As it is structured now, it seems like one single company is in charge of imposing a price change on anybody that buys the product. This price control would be the very definition of a monopoly. I am hopeful you will apply a measure of restraint and common sense in future decision-making processes. Very respectfully, Ric Fischer

As an indie software developer and novelist, I find the notion of exploiting domain name registration for profit extortionate rent-taking. Domain names are are like toll-roads—website owners have little choice but to travel the road if they wish readers, viewers, and users to find their sites on the web. Allowing monopolistic control over domain extensions serves no useful purpose other than to line greedy pockets. Yes, there is a cost to provide the service. And yes, that cost should be covered by registration fees. But the fees should not be allowed to escalate year after year when digital storage, cpu cycles, and network bandwidth are in general decreasing year after year. Der Ladies and Gentleman, we own a two small buisnisses and two .com Domains. The com Domain is worldwide acknowledged and known. With the desired price increase, it would become way too expensive for normal users compared to other TLD domain endings. The biggest positive Thing about the Internet is it's accessibility. Not only for small buisnisses like ours, but even more for regular users like bloggers etc. Such a drastic price increase would drive people away from the com Domain to other, cheaper domains. We would also have to think about a swap to another cheaper Domain should this planned change go through as we are not willing to be a playball to create revenue out of. I hope you reconsider your planned price increase and Stop it. The com Domain would not where it is today with your newly planned prices and it will certainly lose a lot of accessibility and importance to regular users who want to register a TLD. Hi There, I'd like to comment that I think the price increases for wholesale .coms is somewhat diproportionate and unfair and the position in which Verisign (who have a long track record of anti-consumer practices) finds itself is likely to be anti-consumer at best and potentially detrimental to the internet. Because they will have such a strangehold on pricing they can essentially create their own monopoly by having a favoured resseller whom they work with. I think this should be avoided at all costs. I feel let down by ICANN's recent decision regarding it's contract with Verisign. Raising the rates on .com domains is going to make things harder for a lot of people. I feel like the vast majority of domains are very low traffic or don't even point to a website. This is going to make it tougher for low income entrepreneurs like myself to eek out a living. Hello there, I am very much against increasing .com prices, as a matter of fact I think it would be a much more welcome initiative to do something against domain speculators and people buying random domains that will never be used. Moreover it will affect small businesses to take their business online because it will be expensive more than ever. People who own domains for personal reasons and not for intent to create a income will not be able to afford or warrant these price increases. I own a domain so I can have a custom image uploader and have a small portfolio of gaming achievements. If prices increase trying to pay for a domain and a basic shared hosting will become harder. I've recently learned about the proposed amendment 3 and I'm outraged at the lack of transparency and honesty surrounding this deal. This decision will affect millions of people, and yet there seems to be no discourse among those people. This makes you appear to be acting in bad faith. What will you do to counter those optics? Or...do you not care because you'll be stuffed to the gills with cash from Verisign? Please do better, ICANN.

I am a registrant of a .com domain name. I am against the proposed price increase to .COM domains. No one other than Verisign want increases in .COM prices. The current rate of $7.85 is already far more than justified. Verisign is merely your manager of the .COM Registry – it has no business dictating the price.
