Hello, I have been helping businesses and individuals since the beginning of the modern day .com based internet. And I and my clients and friends do not appreciate the proposed changes Verisign and ICANN have agreed to. The purpose of ICANN is to operate in the interests of the PUBLIC, not in the interests of the corporate. And this arrangement will ONLY benefit the corporate entity, Verisign and also ICANN, to the direct detriment of the public to which ICANN is supposed to be operating on behalf of. This is similar to the controversy of the .music or .author or .book or .writer TLDs potentially going to another major corporation such as Amazon, instead of protecting the artist community the TLDs are meant for. This is similar to the misguided AB5 bill that was passed into law in California, where it hurts the vast majority of the people it is pretending to protect. By implementing indiscriminate price increases in a manner that is neither open nor transparent, ICANN will bleed businesses dry. Then where will the money come from? Everyone has their hand out when a business opens it's doors, whether it's a brick-and-mortar enterprise or strictly online. Both types need an Internet presence, but the cost for both is becoming prohibitive. Taxes, licenses, fees...it all adds up and makes the cost of doing business hardly worth it. Now here comes an ICANN price increase and businesses get to keep even less revenue to try to stay afloat. The ICANN manufactured processing arguments are meaningless. The cost of processing has gone up? Provide the figures and documentation to prove it. What's more, the Board needs to step up and not only take responsibility for making a decision that will impact so many on such a large, detrimental scale, but also do their due diligence and analyze the issue before implementing any increases, IF they're found to be warranted and reasonable.

Dear Sirs, I consider the proposed Amendment 3 to be a travesty. It is totally open ended with respect to where the money will be spent. In other words it is loose cash that we the users will be coerced into giving you with no strings attached. $20 million dollars of loose cash. It has the appearance of being a money grab for inflating paychecks and for misdirecting funds to purposes not agreed to by the users. Nothing about the internet operations and oversight is supposed to be a cash cow. It is supposed to be operated in a public and non-profit manner. It does not take million dollar fat-cat paychecks to run the domain name registry system. If you persist in this action expect to be brought before an international tribunal suing to audit the books and if any misuse of monies is detected, criminal charges to be brought against those involved. If you want to save yourselves that headache, then post a proposed expense document with an enumeration of all the projects and paychecks involved in this plan. Otherwise we will consider this to be classic backroom plans for cash diversion to programs and paychecks that would not otherwise be approved. I'm no expert on all the tech, but it seems to me that this has a lot more to do with being a money grab on the backs of the user than for any good purpose. Spreading them out may seem "nice", but ultimately you are creating a "frog in the kettle" scenario where we are dulled to the increases until the price becomes ridiculously (too) high. Hi I am writing to voice my opposition to the proposed arrangement between ICANN and Verisign that will increase rates on the .com domains and decrease competition on companies who provide registrar services. I personally own 40+ domains for myself and my business and this will directly affect me. Certain registrars are already trying to raise prices on top level domain names without adding any more value - it just seems like a price gouge. If there are to be any changes to how domain names are priced, it should be an open process that incorporates more than just the 2 parties who stand to benefit most from the change - ICANN and Verisign. I also want to express my opposition to Verisign becoming a registrar and stifling competition in a space where they have been given a dominant position. Verisign has profited from this first-mover, dominant position for years and trying to get into an even more dominant position only serves them and not the public who relies on affordable domain name fees. 1. To whom it may concern, The internet is a vital part of our economy, a fact I'm sure you're well aware of. Secret deals made behind closed doors that result in a 75% increase in the cost of the most numerous type of domain registration? Hmmm, I wonder what is going on there? Surely if this were really necessary, you'd have asked us what we thought, you'd have brought it up publicly and explained in a reasonable way why this increase is needed. But you didn't. Instead you slunk in, at the last minute, like a dog having taken food off the table, head down, scuttling by, hoping to escape notice. Giving the least amount of time necessary for us to respond. It's shameful, although I know you are immune to that feeling. You have to have pride in what you do to feel shame in doing it poorly. Stop the process. Give us time to discuss it. If it's a real need, and not just a shady cash grab, then we'll understand, and while we might not like it, we'll go forward together. But you won't do that will you? You'll slink along, head held low, eyes downcast, because to you, your pride and honor don't mean anything, and cash does. As someone who owns a few web domains, I am concerned by the recent proposal to change the .com administration contract with Verisign. I understand that freezing the prices of .com domains indefinitely is not reasonable, since inflation is a concern in the long term. However, the proposed terms do not simply index wholesale domain prices to inflation or anything along those lines. To me, it looks like a possibly corrupt move to let Verisign raise rent on internet users in exchange for Verisign shelling out an extra $20 million to ICANN. Please don't give a government-granted monopoly more freedom to raise prices without adequate oversight and reasonable cause. --Rome R.

Increasing the price of .COM domain names by 70% over the next decade (as you seem to be intending to do) will force me to abandon many of my websites — which I currently keep up for the sake of letting people explore and enjoy these past personal art projects. Your proposed plan will force many creatives to make the same choice, and you'll be responsible for removing much of the web's history — thereby making the internet a less diverse, interesting, and creative place. If you guys increase the prices for .com domains, I will not be able to provide these services for much longer. Some of these are quality of life services that wouldnt qualify for monetary gain and charging for them would make no sense. I urge you guys to reconsider and to remember the importance that .com domains have to people. Its the most common and natural TLD and people most easily remember it and naturally end up typing it. In my opinion, it is backdoor deals, like the one being discussed here, that harm America the most. The people that have all the money and power keep asking for or just taking more. Making it more expensive for average Americans to hold .com domains will only cut off more communication by said Americans to the rest of the world, making it harder to hear the real voice of the people. Make no mistake, it is we who are the real voice of our nation, not those whose opinions are bought and paid for by companies who do deals in secret. Do we really want to further their domination of the things we read, products we buy, the income we are offered, the news we hear? That's exactly what will happen if it becomes 70% more expensive to own a domain on the internet. We will lose the input of countless contributors to the shared information highway, giving those who use money and power to help only themselves a further reach into our daily lives, expanding their control. Dear ICANN, Such decisions as those that lead to end customer's money (like already stated in LOI, a signed legal document) have to be made AFTER consulting to all parties involved. Otherwise we should not support ICANN as a representative of internet community. Furthermore, this indeed would be absolutely logical to expect explanation what ICANN what's to do with 20M of money: specifically how it is going to be spent and what result do we expect to acheave for these (our - at the end) money. In other words, we are expected to pay up to twice more but no idea for what!? May be there would be a sense to move .COM domain control from Verisign to someone else who could do the job cheaper? Dear ICANN, I am opposed to the proposed amendment which will result in a price increase to .COM domains from which Verisign will profit immensely for no justified and explicit reasons. At the very least, there should be a detailed plan and estimate on how the proposed cost increases will benefit the public interest before making such sweeping changes and only profit a single managing entity with vague terms. There should also be an evaluation of the current cost of managing the domain in comparison to how much is generated under the current pricing agreement to judge how well Verisign has been managing the domain in comparison to other companies. Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing in regard with the proposed Amendment 3 and it’s effect on the internet as we know it. Nowadays many individuals, such as myself, own their personal TLD .com for personal use or as online portfolios. The reason I bought my .com domain was the low price and the advantages it brings for me as a developer, allowing me to learn, by using this domain, about the technology of sites, web protocols such as http and https, as well as realizing the importance of Secure data transmission for any online activity. Securing the data transmission without a domain is almost impossible, as far as I know, so low prices for .com domains actually makes the web a safer place for us, teaching the “young” ones that encryption and secure data transmissions are not only easy to use but also mandatory in the world we live in. I ask you to not fulfill this Amendment as the increase in price will only discourage individuals and small businesses , as corporations won’t have any problem paying the increasing fees, but for a individual it will become costly to own a domain. Also competition is the mother of invention so allowing Verisign to operate as a domain registrar will likely create a monopoly in the domain market and creating unfair commerce at the expense of the public, who will have no choice but to pay the increasing fees or move to another platform for their online presence, as individuals or companies, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I once again ask you to think twice and not Approve this Amendment as it will hurt many individuals owning domains and it could even change the internet as we know it. First, this seems like a conflict of interest, sort of like letting the accused select which witnesses get to testify, or, as in recent times, to allow NO witnesses to testify at all. Second, with everything being handled by computers for the registration and maintenance of .COM domain names, and with little to no need for human interaction, the increased costs seem counter-intuitive. Prices should be dropping, not increasing. Third, not all online models can transfer to mobile 'apps' where the need for a .com domain is no longer even needed. Instead, we live and die by our .com domain names. The increased costs add an additional burden upon those who must maintain these domain names or even multiple versions of the same domain name in order to protect our intellectual property. For example, if I owned a company such as XYZShoes.com I would also need to register names like XYZ-Shoes.com, X-Y-Z-Shoes.com, XYZShoes.biz, etc. to keep people from trying to take traffic from me by using very similar domain names like "XYZShoe.com." Indeed, for a now-defunct online business I once owned I received constant offers to 'sell' me dozens of variations of my own domain names with threats of other people getting them if I didn't buy them and thus risk someone registering a variation as a trademark then suing me for infringement. This stuff goes on every day. In summary, I do not see any benefit to giving ICANN the ability to raise prices not in keeping with the actual market and indeed creating more harm than good by giving them the ability to raise wholesale costs on a product like this where there is no actual cost on their end beyond giving their executives raises and more office space. I disagree with the lack of openness regarding the proposed changes and the intent to tie a closer relationship with Verisign with an uncapped and uncontrolled fee structure over the next 10 years. The .COM registration fees are currently out of control and only getting worse. There’s no evidence that the proposed amendment will promote a stronger DNS solution or promote a healthy marketplace. I’m disheartened by this proposal and others that ICANN are considering (like with .ORG domains) as it seems like there are nefarious decisions being made without public discussion for a global service. This proposal implies that ICANN is resolving its responsibility and giving it to a private company. Vote NO on the amendment. Thank you, Ryan
