I would like to add my comments to the Proposed Amendment referenced above. I am concerned that ICANN is allowing Verisign to operate as a domain registrar, which will harm competition from other registrars. I am also unhappy with the proposed price increases, which could allow for enormous price hikes to .com domains in the next decade. Websites are now a vital part of business/life, and the potential to have web addresses become excessively expensive is of concern. Please consider the input from users and other domain registrars before proceeding with the proposed amendment. Thank you, Alison

Hi there, my name is Danielle Vernelson, and I'm the owner of several .com domains. I've also resold several domains to clients as a web designer. I would like to strongly protest the fact that Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years. This seems ridiculous and totally unnecessary. Currently, I and my clients pay about $10 per year for their domains, and more for hosting. I see no reason why this should increase, since we aren't getting much out of domain registration except to have access to that name. Increasing the cost would be inappropriate, because it isn't representative of what a domain is worth. In addition, it would keep people from being able to easily and cheaply put up websites, which is something that local businesses depend on. To me, it sounds like dirty dealing, since in return, Version will be paying ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support your domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how you will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. All of this seems very unnecessary, and like a scheme to get rich at any cost. Please instead, keep things simple, and keep providing affordable domains to small (and large) businesses. Alongside these contract changes, Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. I am agains you allowing increases in our .com address. It was/is an international free registration. Why are you doing this? So you receive additional $20million and we get to pay Very unfair for small companies. Also there is to ceiling put on this increase. Folks, Are you kidding? Again?? Less than a year after trying to increase .org domain fees with the PIR, you're trying this again?? WHY?? Because Verisign bribed you to? Your greed? It's corruption like we've never seen, allowing your briber to make up their bribe on the backs of the little guy. This is just plain wrong-headed. We're a small art gallery in a small community, effectively staffed by volunteers. We don't have money to pay staff, so we exchange gallery sitting time for lower commissions on the few artworks our folks sell. We fortunately own the building and are seen as great supporters of the arts in our little community. In return, that helps us provide much-needed commercial support for the community in general, based on arts tourism. We need an affordable web site to do that. Having to pay more for our web site registration, in addition to the hosting of it, would add yet another struggling cost. To date, we could depend on the cost of our web site. Why would you want to make that so much less certain? I STRONGLY encourage you to keep the current controls in place - PLEASE! Don't profit off the backs of the little guy! This proposal seems like an out of touch cash grab. Does Verisign really need an additional $750 million per YEAR to continue doing what they are currently doing? Tech gets cheaper over time - so this is just pure profit. If ICANN needs funding ($20 mil goes to them) - just raise once by a dollar and get 10x. Hello, Considering .com domains are so common and used by businesses and people across the globe, this proposed amendment stinks of corruption and greed. Especially when the window for public comments was kept short and the discussion was held behind closed doors. I can understand removing the form on your website as you were probably overwhelmed with comments like these. People that are very much against the proposed price hike. A proposal that can increase domain prices by 70%+ over the next decade. But if that’s any hint of where people stand, that should be it. Not to mention people on Twitter, Reddit, and others are speaking up against this. Internet is meant to be available for everyone. Raising the bar for the most common top level domain seems to go against the very foundation of what it stands for. Do the people at ICANN still have a moral compass? I want to understand why this amendment is taking place. The internet has become a staple (no, a utility) to life in the US. We all use the internet with limited understanding of how it works, and the majority of its users assume a website ends in ‘.com’. The internet hosts vast repositories of information and communities rely on the technology to share ideas and concerns around the planet in seconds. This kind of access is unprecedented and facilitated by the low barrier to getting a website up and running. Sure, traditionally people needed a number of years to develop their skills in order to deploy a functional site, but this has become even easier with boilerplates and source code becoming freely available online. Most populations, particularly those on the fringes of society, are vulnerable to not knowing that the activation energy required to make their content available is increasing. Since no change this drastic happens in a vacuum, I’m willing to expect a ripple effect across the entire internet economy. By increasing the cost to maintain a common .com website, you are ensuring fewer people will be able to generate and maintain the communities they’ve come to except. The fact that this is done surreptitiously, is yet another concern. I did not realize the price of websites was inappropriate for maintaining the status quo, but if a change needed to be made I would expect it to be justified. Please elucidate what is expected to come with this price gouging technique. Will this extra cost dissolve the technological understanding between those that build the internet and those that simply use it. Will the extra cost pay for speed increases for those populations that have yet to get online? What about the environmental impact the internet demands on the planet; will you make things more efficient? Raising prices makes sense, but only if you have some justification! Please consider your reasoning and I hope to see this weighing made more clear in your amendment. I currently am not in support of this endeavor and hope you reconsider your options heavily.
