As a private individual and small business owner, I have a few .COM domains. The proposed increase in the wholesale price of .COM domains seems entirely unjustified. As a software professional, I know how bandwidth and compute prices have been moving, and this increase of well beyond inflation strikes me as a money grab based on having a captive audience. Kevin

Good afternoon, It has been brought to my attention that there will be potential price increases to .COM domains in the near future. I am appalled that such a stance has been taken behind closed doors without any regard for the community of digital entrepreneurs whom seek to keep access to all domains an even and level playing-field. Furthermore, it is unfortunate that a deal of such magnitude was agreed upon without any input and suggestion given from the community which ICANN serves. It is my sincerest hope that an equitable decision benefitting all participants in the industry be made justly and swiftly. Thank you, OAO

I am writing to oppose the proposed amendment 3. Allowing for substantial price increases in .com domain names will limit accessibility to the internet as a whole. It will hinder anyone who relies on domain for income, and it will further exacerbate the corporatizion of the web. I understand the need to raise funds, but it should not be done without a clear and concise plan for how those funds should be spent to better the internet community as a whole. Best, Jenna Pinkham

To Whom It May Concern, This amendment must not be ratified. This places an even greater financial burden upon small businesses and possibly an onerous increase in fees. The fact that the meetings held regarding this was private and the money changing hands to ICAAN without oversight or directives of use, is appalling. There is zero accountability and clandestine meetings are not a way to instill confidence in an organization that should have clear and visible organization, direction and operations. Like it will make any difference submitting a comment to any of you would-be watchdogs, but your proposed amendment, worked out as it was in secret with Verisign (an Evil Corp subsidiary) appears mostly to be a license to steal — as always, from those who can least afford it. So hey, good plan. I assume the median income of ICANN employees and contractors just isn't what it should be, at least not yet. I am very happy and have been very happy with the way .coms have been working. I am not happy to hear about prices changes and process changes. I host several websites for people and the consistent .com pricing helps me keep their prices nice and flat. Hearing about yearly prices changes sounds like an unnecessary headache for me and my customers. This change makes it sound like it might be easier to cut down the number of domains I have to save costs. These low domain costs allow me to offer several domains and several options to my customers. Please do not raise prices out of greed. This is a very low cost product. Yearly price increases are just not neccesary especially now with all the new TLD's and new money ICANN is making. -Ari

I’m alarmed and saddened by Amendment 3 being approved without any input from people like me who hold IP addresses and pay annual fees for them. If I hadn’t been contacted by namecheap.com, I never would have know about this action, and I would have missed the deadline for comment. Don’t you guys inform us about this important stuff? Transparency?? Please reconsider this contract change with Verisign. Keep the internet affordable! I’m alarmed and saddened but I’m not furious, yet! Stop the Amendment. Thank you. This means an even bigger gap in the global economy. Hello, we are the internet company which earn money by making websites and helping our customers to grow their business in different ways including .com domain registration. Increasing prices for this domain will harm ours business since we will have to increase prices for our customers as well. A lot of them already have websites in .com zone and it might force them and us to consider other options (which we don't want to) We believe that there are many other context-related zones where prices can vary (and are), but the most common and popular commercial zone should be as cheap as possible to encourage people to use. We would like to vote against the increase and looking forward to your understandanding and cooperation with all companies and businesses like us. Thank you!

RE: Proposed Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement Secret meetings between ICANN and Verisign are not acceptable. I unilaterally demand that all changes impacting the .COM TLD be in the public. As such, I demand that the current contract amendment being considered be nullified and the process re-started in a transparent and public format. Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement is harmful to the public as it raises the costs associated with the use of the Internet. As I understand, Verisign is paying off ICANN with $20 million to push though it requested price hikes. Bribery, payoffs, and kickbacks are NOT acceptable business practices. Even the perception of bribery, payoffs, and kickbacks should be enough for ICANN to re-start the agreement negotiations in a public and transparent process - otherwise, one will only assume that, indeed, bribery, payoffs, and kickbacks are the norm within ICANN and as such, should immediately brought to a court of law through an exhaustive forensic investigative process. To Icann: I received the following from NAMECHEAP - and if correct, wanted to express my disapproval of Verisign's ability to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains. I do not approve of ICANN making this change in secret and oppose such action with Verisign. "...Last month, ICANN, the organization that oversees domain names, announced significant changes to the contract it has with Verisign, Inc. who operate the .COM top-level-domain (TLD). ICANN made these changes in secret, without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or Internet users. Although ICANN has a history of making similar deals behind closed doors, and also of ignoring unified opposition against such action, we are focused on leading the fight against price increases that will harm our customers (and the Internet as a whole). This is a crucial time to raise our voices given that .COM domains make up 40% of all registered domain names online. Wholesale registries charge Namecheap a set fee per domain name per year. According to this new agreement, Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases don’t stop there. This will mean that .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. The contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody." Please abstain from these contract changes with Verisign as the current arrangement and pricing structure is beneficial to small businesses like mine.
