I protest the secret deal made by ICANN with VERISIGN. Both organizations do very little with regards to registering domain names and yet they want to raise prices. The monopolistic hold over TLDs is the only reason this can happen. One cure for monopolies is government regulation, a necessary evil that may be appropriate in this case. I will puruse that angle if these increases are enacted.

I am opposed to allowing 7% annual price increases on .com registrations. I personally feel an inflation-indexed increase every 5 years is more appropriate. I am also opposed to one company being allowed to operate at multiple levels of the system (TLD operated and registrar) where it applies to the largest and oldest TLDs.

Hello, I am writing today to voice my strong opposition to Proposed Amendment 3. An incredible amount of websites make use of .com domains, not just commercial sites. Raising prices on such an ubiquitous domain will not hurt large corporations, but individual people. The web is first and foremost a place for people to share. This is what makes the web great. An enthusiastic 12 year-old can have their own domain these days, and share what they love with an accessible domain. Raising prices adds barriers for each and every one of us that would like to share with others on the internet. With an arbitrary price increase, it is not an Internet for the people that I foresee, but for businesses with large amounts of money to spare. Hi, I strongly oppose the move to increase .com domain fee. It is totally unethical and against the customer policy that will adversely affect the small domain holders like me. I think before this amendment can be accepted we should get some clarity on how ICANN will spend the money. I think we also need to get some sort of third party or someone to make sure that ICANN spends the funds properly on infrastructure. Some oversight from an independent third party with something that affects so many people I think is very important. I think that ICANN making these changes without consulting or incorporating feedback from the ICANN community or internet users should be reevaluated for future deals that ICANN does. Generally I think that transparency is beneficial for all involved. Thanks.

I am concerned with the unilateral decision taken by ICANN and Verisign to increase domain prices which, in my opinion, will distort the very nature of the internet by discriminating against the small business owner and user in of powerful corporations. The diversity of the internet is at stake by keeping domains accessible to everyone. Internet is not just about milking as much money as you can but trying to create a universal record of human endeavour with lots of domains not registering any financial gain. Dear Management, I have gone through the aforementioned subject matter with a painstaking effort. Being a blogger who currently registered with Namecheap, it would be outrageous to impose such 70% benchmark on annual renewal cum registration of blogs. This proposed initiative will two effects: 1) The high rate of registration fee for domain names and the likes would scare prospects away; and 2) There is possibility of most current bloggers developing cold feet in the business and, ultimately, pulling out. I just learned that ICAAN has secretly negotiated with Verisign a deal that would allow them to increase .com registration fees each year for the next right years. This deal would only benefit Verisign and, of course ICAAN to the tune of up to fifteen million dollars. Consumers of .com domains, most of whom are small businesses, including startups and very small operators from overseas, would bear the brunt of this sweetheart deal for you and Verisign. I urge you in the strongest terms possible to reconsider moving forward with this deal, and provide a legitimate chance for a true public discussion before deciding the way, if any, forward. Costs go up over time and revenues must rise to cover them or a business will go under. But most businesses have to deal with an open market and make the pricing decisions based on what the market will bear. With this amendment, ICANN effectively wields its monopoly power to demand more money with no opportunity for the market to respond. This is an unfair practice and must be stopped. If ICANN needs to raise revenues, let them deal with their customers in an open an fair fashion rather than simply demanding the price they want.

I feel that I've been hold hostage in this. Unless I pay higher prices for my domain, I dont have one. I chose name cheap for a reason to get a domain cheap and easy to use. I dont think I should pay a small fortune to have a domain,its just not right. Thank you Blair W

I am a very small user of .com domains but require several .com domain names to point to my main website. As, I am sure, many users such as me do not earn a living with our sites, we do require an internet presence. If the cost of a .com domain can not be predicted, and the price continues to increase without restraint, it will put a huge strain on our finances. My belief since the onset of ICANN was that this organization was created to assure a controlled internet connectivity where the interests of ALL involved would be addressed. To protect the interests of the domain name buyers, I feel that the TLD operators should not be allowed to adjust (increase) domain prices without a publicly-fielded justification. Please do not allow Verisign the ability to increase their prices without first presenting this intention for public comment. Thank you, —David Crellen

I oppose Amendment 3 to the .COM Registry Agreement. I believe that allowing wholesale prices for .com domains to rise 72% over 12 years, which is far more than the rate of inflation and also far more than Verisign's underlying costs of maintaining the registry could possibly increase by, will dramatically hurt the internet ecosystem. It will especially hurt small website operators, like myself, and will discourage internet users from creating blogs and personal pages, with the end result of reducing democratization of the internet. Verisign reported a 69.4% operating margin in Q1 2019, so they clearly do not need the extra revenue from this price hike. ICANN has granted a monopoly over .com to Verisign and ICANN has a duty to every internet user on the planet to carefully regulate this monopoly to prevent abuse by Verisign. The only conscionable thing to do right now is to freeze wholesale .com prices and re-evaluate 5-10 years from now. A policy that allows price increases tracking the rate of inflation (but no higher) may make sense in the future, but right now Verisign is already collecting far more from their .com monopoly than any company would be able to in a competitive market [1]. It's simply not right to allow them to raise prices at this time.

Please limit the increase in fees per year. If a domain is already paid for, fees should be kept as it until renewal. A better explanation of the purpose for the upgraded fees should be posted along with a plan for how they will be used. Expenses go up with time and perhaps its time to increase again, however, the sheer number and increase in said number of registered domains should allow cost growth to be limited in nature. Perhaps heavy fees could be added to the cost of third party domain sales, meaning one company is buying a domain from another company(and/or party), meaning any sales not involving domain registrars like godaddy and namecheap. Lets not force small shops to shoulder the burden of maintaining text files. Brent Kennedy IT Director and Multi-Domain owner.

The marginal cost of these domains is reducing as machines get more powerful and bandwidth more plentiful, there's no basis for continually increasing the cost of an entry in a database. Although it's beneficial there should be a nonzero cost to cover operations, people renting these domains have no choice but to do so or lose their services like email that rely on them, making price increases a ransom without any advantage for the domain renter. Logically, the price should be dropping, not increasing. Instead of this, please consider an open tender for verisgn's role to be chosen on end-user price efficiency. -Andy
