There are many individuals and small businesses who will be greatly harmed in the purposed price increase. Many individuals such as myself don't generate income from the domain names that I own and as such there would be no use in my continued ownership of those domains which though I'm just one individual, there are many like minded people who share my situation. The end result will be the price driving small businesses and individuals who make up the greater part of the .COM owners to seek other options such as Facebook instead. Don't hurt the little people.

I am opposed to any actions that would increase the price of registering a domain, COM especially. In a time where many are struggling to put food on the table reasonably priced domain names help many people pull themselves up into a better financial position. Through commerce, education and communication of specific needs to remain productive. Consider not supporting any changes that would harm this public good. Kim Regan

Good Evening, It has come to my attention that ICANN and Verisign are considering renegotiating their contract, a move which could (and more than likely would) raise the price of domain names. As a student, I have a limited income and require my website to exist in order for me to host my portfolio projects in order to get a job. A price increase would make this effort much more difficult for me, as I already have a limited income stream due to being a full time student. Keeping prices low is a massive driving force behind many entering website ownership. By increasing the price of this service, people will effectively have their voices silenced due to the price of entry. We're living in a more and more Orwellian world with each passing day, and the last thing we need is for the internet to be gated off to new content due to the greed of another corporation. Please consider not taking the $20,000,000 check and consider the people who are paying your bills (consumers, like me) for once. Regards, Austin Roorda

To raise the prices for 8 out of the next 10 years is to advocate for the rich instead of making it accessible to budding internet entrepreneurs who are just making their way in the world. The higher the cost to just register a domain name means it is less likely to pursue a career online. The domain costs shouldn’t be a factor in getting started and that keeping it low will continue to encourage the future generations to follow their passions and their dreams. Don’t let a money-grab destroy the future of our children’s ability to pursue online hobbies and/or businesses. Things such as blogs, landing pages or even just IP protection etc where people such as myself register the domain names for our credibility and appearance. Sometimes even to register for an aspiring business down the line. These types of changes can greatly hinder the desire to pursue them and it just wouldn’t be fair. If you’re going to raise the prices regardless, tax it on the bandwidth used. Use a model that allows entry early for the first 2 years and than using the data to raise the price accordingly. High traffic websites will barely notice the cost especially with their multi-million dollar revenue.

I dont think ICANN did a good job of explaining in a clear and simple way why they need to make these changes. >From my perspective, the current system is working fine. The current annual fees seem reasonable. It isnt clear why .com needs additional changes or funding. -bob

Running a business is already expensive enough, and with tax increases to small business owners, knowing that owning my domains could potentially increase in cost by up to 70% is really distressing. It appears that ICANN and Verisign are treating their relationship as a monopoly, or a public utility, without any checks and balances when making new agreements on how the prices for domains are structured. ICANN must address all matters of payment to a third and an independent party that has an obligation to protect consumers, such as FTC or DOJ. ICANN and Verisign should never enter into any private agreements due to limitations laid out in the Section 1 of the Sherman Act in the United States. If wholesale prices for domains cannot be set by market forces, they must be set by a public utility - there is no third option.

There is no reason to having an ever increasing domain name price that is way greater then inflation. We disagree with the objectives behind the increase amendment with VerSign as it does not mandate where Versign should allocate the increases to service improvements. This will also increase dark web usefulness for the 8 out of 10 years - guaranteed. We might also lobby to make ICANN, an obsolete organization in the 2020s and go direct to VeriSign or another NGO which better serves the public interests.

Hello I am writing to express a few concerns regarding ICAAN's desire to increase pricing of wholesale .com domains. At this time there does not seem to be material justification to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains. With 7% increases, within 10 years, .COM domains could cost approximately 70% more than they do now, and there is no operational or cost justification for this increase in cost. Last time you opened to public comment, there was an overwhelming support for price controls for .org .info and .biz TLDs. I believe something like 3,500 comments were submitted in support of price controls with a mere six comments supporting removing price controls. Can you explain the reasoning for allowing Verisign to operate as a Domain Registrar - the appear to be agency issues in this decisions given they company controls almost 80% of the registrar pricing for domain names and will compete directly with all domain registrars. Fewer registrars will harm competition and domain name services. The consequences of this pending decision will impact the Internet for many years, and ICAAN responsibility to make sure average everyday people are not harmed by the unilateral decisions that cause arbitrary price increases. The proposed amendment to ICANN's agreement with Verisign was arranged unfairly and will be damaging to the internet as a whole. The .com domains account for 40% of all internet domains and the effect will be to increase costs of registering these domains by 70% over the next decade. No doubt ICANN executives would like to receive $20 million dollars for quietly making this agreement, with no strings attached and no accountability. But ICANN should have the welfare of the internet in mind and not accept these bribes from large corporations which stand to benefit enormously from these changes by enacting huge price increases. - Marc Culler

As a self-employed designer, I have limited resources and a salary increasingly impacted by rising charges. A domain and accompanying website is a necessity in this day and age. But, should renewal prices increase, it may well be I have to cut costs in that area and drop .com. Please consider the thousands upon thousands of domain owners that do not have unlimited funds. I've had to pay twice as much for a domain and I can't imagine having to pay these exorbitant prices for domains!
