We are starting a nationwide political campaign to wrestle away the power given to ICANN, including the ability to do behind-closed-doors deals with private companies. The proposed increases to the (dot)COM TLD are simply preposterous and abusive. ICANN unwillingness to disclose the use of these funds (derived from sales to Verisign) indicates highly questionable accounting practices and under-the-table deals. We are asking the State Dept., and the Department of Justice to open an investigation in the all income and compensations received by all members currently working directly or indirectly under the ICANN umbrella. On what basis are the proposed price increases to be allowed? Do the .COM domains incur higher administrative costs? Will Verisign provide better service to domain registrars? Based on recent consumer price inflation of about 2% per year, a 7% yearly increase in wholesale domain prices can only be seen as a means to extract more revenue from the ultimate domain consumers, i.e., the website owners, without adding *any* value for registrars or domain owners, but simply to add 7% per year to Verisign's bottom line. I understand that, under the proposal, the new contract between ICANN and Verisign will entail the former will receive an extra $20 million over five years from the latter. This sounds as scandalous as a utility regulator receving a bribe from a utility company in order to induce the regulator to approve a rate increase. I oppose the proposed amendment. I also wonder why is Verisign allowed to act as a .COM wholesale domain provider, while still acting as a domain registrar. It is analogous to the FCC granting special privileges to some company to act as wholesale radio-TV or other spectrum "provider", while still being allowed to compete with the other companies not granted that privilege, i.e., on an unequal basis. Access to domain services is vital to the continued use and growth of the internet and modern society. Allowing a for-profit company to unilaterally decide when and by how much to raise prices is a recipe for disaster. Coupled with the secret negotiations between ICANN and Verisign, the commissions that ICANN receives on each registration, and the extra $20 million in earmarked but unenforceable funds casts strong doubt on the public benefit of this deal and casts both players as corrupt organizations pillaging from the global population. Hi, I just heard the news about the possible price increase for the .com domains and wanted to share my views about this matter. I'm a web developer and I deal with customer domain registrations and even at the current rates customers always find prices to high, I resale for only £15 a year, making about £5 profit year due to competition and they even find that too much possible price increase will cause me to loose clients or cause them to move away from .com. Web industry consists of many different costs, server, domain, mails, ssl, website infrastructure plugins and etc. And increasing prices always have negative effects. I've had my .com since 2003 or 2004; I don't sell anything, I don't have any ads, and I have never made money from the domain. Hello, I am a small business owner. I can not afford the increased yearly fees that will go into effect according the changes in the contract with Verisign. My income will not increase more than 70% over the next decade to keep up with the projected 70% price increase over the next decade. Please do not hurt small business like mine with the price increases. I use my domain as part of my marketing and helping clients find me. If I have to cancel my domain name it will be hard for clients to find me which will have a negative effect on my business and its growth. There are so many other businesses like mine that will suffer financially with such drastic increases. The CPI increases are only about 2-3% a year. Please come up with a better non-destructive plan. This will impact a very large number of people who already incur significant costs for maintaining .COM registrations. Me and my company object to significant price increases for obtaining new and/or renewing domain names from registrars. Many of our clients start with very little capital and startups are already financially risky. It does not help matters to add extra costs to new and growing companies. Social media sites seem to have taken majority of the traffic and there's already less visitors to small business sites. These small businesses have to invest more money already, competing with the bigger companies while search engines are making constant changes and requirements to how the web should be, thus requiring more investment in developers. Hi ICANN, As the owner of multiple .com domains, both personally for my own small business and managing this as part of my job role day to day for work also, I find it totally disrespectful that you have chosen to even consider a financial offering from Verisign of this magnitude to allow for what is proposed to be a huge hike in .com wholesale domain prices of potentially up to 70% increase. The new TLD's are already extortionate and should have helped expand the web, instead it has been seen as another money making opportunity and only restricting growth and accessibility online globally as a result. Totally disgusting and as the governing body for this, your one key role is to avoid this sort of disgraceful act happening in the first place, not be the culprit or a clear party to such an act. These sort of acts will drive the web into the ground, go against the whole purpose of what the web stands for and drive uproar and acts that would see governing bodies targeted, if not at a government level questioned for acts of inflation beyond justifiable grounds. I for one would like to see this proposal retracted, public inclusion in all decisions going forward, greater transparency of every agreement no matter the scale, very much like any government, your role is simple but not to take financial rewards to allow for inflated gains for others. To quote: "The idea is that Internet governance should mimic the structure of the Internet itself- borderless and open to all.", this act will be the complete opposite of your own values. If money is the driver, just like SSL encryption has done to help make the web a better and safer place, lets look at open source opportunities for domain management, ownership and governance instead of supporting those out to control and just financially gain through such process and acts. Through open source means to govern the web and the TLD's and its registrars, millions of contributors bought into each decision of the global web, its standards, domain management, instead of a select few willing to take a payoff and claim it's in the interest of the WWW. As you can gather I am not best pleased to hear this news nor that ICANN are at the heart of this $20 million dollar payoff. Retract, publicly announce and move forward! To whom this may concern, Please stop this proposal from going forward. The approved increment price-increases in the proposition are harmful for the accessibility of the internet. By allowing a continuous price increase over such an extended period of time, you’d be actively supporting the restriction of ownership of a domain name for those with a lesser income. Not only would this impact those who use a domain name for personal use, it also prohibits those, especially youth on a small budget, who use the internet to start their own small business. While I completely understand this is may not be your main concern, in many rural countries, such small businesses and entrepreneurship can prove vital to local communities. I plead with you to please reconsider the proposal as a whole or at the very least, restrict the annual price increase to no more then 2 to 3%, so that those who depend on the accessibility of both .com and the internet, have a better chance.
