I understand that there is a new agreement that Verisign will be allowed to increase the wholesale price to registrars for .COM domains every year for 8 out of the next 10 years, and the increases. This means .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. I also understand the contract also allows for other price increases, which could drive prices up further, ultimately making .COM domains less accessible and more expensive for everybody. This new agreement is unfair trade practices in my opinion. Having a monopoly of sorts and using that stronghold to increase pricing is not acceptable. Thank you for listening. Shawn

Dear ICANN, I am strongly opposed to the proposed price increase for .com domains. Prices should be reduced, not increased. Please put the .com registry management out to bid and let the lowest bid win! I've heard many estimates as low as $2 to $3 per domain for the actual cost of running the .com registry. Lowering prices for legacy extensions is the direction that ICANN should be going. The switching costs to move domains to an alternative like .xyz are too high in terms of marketing, branding, SEO, physical signs, etc, so I am captive to using .com, as are tens of millions of other people. I don’t feel that anyone other than Verisign wants increases in .COM prices. The current rate of marginally less than $10 is already high for the service provided. Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to voice extreme concern over the proposed change related to .com registry. Without additional information, the public is only made aware that ICANN is allowing a business to raise prices, and that business is proposing a large donation back to ICANN for infrastructure. I do not expect to be concerned with how the funds are spent, but without further details there is no understanding. This reflects extremely poorly on ICANN as an impartial governing body, not because anything wrong is being done but because without details and accountability there is no platform for trust. Many of us with a .com address are just barely holding on with existing prices. To see prices rise 8 out of the next ten years is untenable. Since this is something that hasn't changed in so long, none of us smalltime operators have a plan for dealing with this raise. If there is any way to mitigate this for smaller domains who can't afford it, that would be so important for the survival of small businesses, who are already threatened by the giants. Thanks, Wendy

Hello, I've grown up on the Internet for the past 30 years. The fundamental spirit of openness on the internet has truly changed my perspective about how large systems and organizations can operate. It is an idealism which has manifested very well on the world wide web. As far as I can tell the decision to allow Verisign to operate as a domain registrar sounds harmful to the price of .com domains. But the price alone is not as important as the ability for other companies to operate competitively to offer consumers freedom to choose among many options. In this crazy world of capitalism, please play fair. It is unwise to take Verisign's money in exchange for making them a registrar. Also, I will be the first to admit that I don't understand all of what's going on, but the whole thing sounds fishy to me and I don't like it. ICANN you can do better. Hello I understand that a new proposal regarding .com pricing that could affect all COM domains - up to 40% of all registered domain names online. That .COM wholesale domain prices can grow by more than 70% over and above current prices over the next decade. I understand Verisign agreed to pay ICANN an additional $20 million dollars over five years to support ICANN's domain name system initiatives, without any clarity about how ICANN will spend the money, or who will ensure that the funds are properly spent on domain infrastructure. My son recently started a business selling graphic art tees and sweaters. He is only 18 and soon to graduate high and works a part time job on the weekends. He just got his website started and can not afford to pay any extra for his .COM. He is starting his business on a show string budget and every dollar counts. I to have a .COM and I have not even got my business started I’m in the building process getting all my affairs in order before I can actually begin making money if my .COM price goes up I can’t hold on to them until I am ready to get my business going. Please reconsider this price increase it will hurt the small business community the start up part of building a business is the hardest part and for young inspiring minds that want to create a space online this will hurt them. I hope this decision is made very carefully. I am not questioning the need for price adjustment over time but I'm very interested to know how the new value (7%) increase is being calculated? I would love to see the justification for such an increase in the prices. It feels like going back to the '90s when the domain prices used to be very high. I want to urge ICANN to remember that they are managing a public trust, for the common good - not a profit-seeking enterprise. As such, transparency in the decision-making process (including motivations, funding, and budgets) and responsiveness to the community (see e.g. the price controls debacle, where the vast majority of the community supported price controls, and their voices were dismissed because an online tool was used to submit them) are of critical import. Verisign has a checkered history when it comes to operating ethically in the TLD space, and ICANN has a responsibility first and foremost to the community, *not* to commercial DNS operators. It makes little sense to remove one of the few checks against Verisign’s behavior by allowing them to operate a TLD *and* become a domain registrar in that same space (either directly or via an intermediary). Please deliberate and act on behalf of the Internet community as a whole; non-profits and individuals have no more primary representative in this process than ICANN. Sincerely, Scott Francis

I am saddened by the news that you are going to be jacking up prices for .com domains and by the sounds of it to the point that people like me will inevitably need to give up our websites and personal domains because of it. I get it that elitist pricks want to deprive everyone else of pleasures large and small and limit any worldly benefits to only a small percentage of people who can "afford it" but shame on you for ruining the internet. I think that if I can not participate in the internet by having my own domain then I will just boycott the entire internet all together. If I can no longer display my photography portfolio online then I no longer wish to shop online or read internet news articles either.
