The news of proposed changes to the contract ICANN has with VeriSign, Inc. is a concern to everyone downstream of them, to say the least. What led to this? A lack of financial prudence? ICANN's unrealistic political and operational targets? A view to increasing profits? When you're talking about increased prices and you're allowed to do that at VeriSign, I don't know that's going to produce any better safety or security from anyone who's paying that additional cost. There is nothing that tells us that would be the case. On the wrong side of history VeriSign and ICANN seem to have us over a barrel. This agreement gives a perpetual monopoly to a company and the power to enact unregulated price increases. This has serious anti-competitive implications. This is not how a non-profit, essentially a public trust, should be run. The resolution of your long-standing and costly litigation with VeriSign is not our responsibility and the cost should not be imposed on us. Should ICANN's non-profit status be revoked and the administering of these services be considered a public utility? Stop this foolishness and set a price cap.
