Dear Sirs, .org domains are used most frequently by non-profit organizations. It seems to me inappropriate to increase the costs of such organizations by increasing the price of .org domain registration. Thanks for taking my opinion on this into consideration. Michel Baise

I would like to ask in simple terms if the current rule is broken, what needs fixing, and who benefits the most from the new arrangement! Because dormain owners could lose sense of ownership if they cant predict the cost of renewal over time! May not understand the fine details but IMHO i think its not a positive step!

Many people using the .org domain are nonprofit, therefore raising the prices for the would be a poor decision. In no way would these changes be beneficial to consumers. You would undoubtedly lose business for this, and .org would lose value.

As a faith based non-profit organization, the .org TLD is important to our Internet identity. We cannot afford operational cost increases just to maintain our Internet presence. The .org TLD should be managed to the benefit of non-profit organizations. Removing contractual price limits only encourages the Public Interest Registry to become the "Profit Interest Registry". I will happily support adding a proof of non-profit status requirement for .org domain registrations and renewals. *Please do not make the same mistake you made with the .now TLD. The .org TLD MUST be managed for the interest of non-profits worldwide. Keep the price limits in place for .org!* **

I am a .org registrant. ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a ‘bottom up, multi-stakeholder model’. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. ICANN should stand up for the public interest and registrants! -- Sent via phone

I am one of the "ancient denizens" of the Internet, having created the second private domain, 42nd overall domain (octopus.com) I'm astounded that ICANN would even consider allowing for unrestrained domain registration prices on the foundational TLD's of the 'net (COM, NET, ORG, INFO, BIZ). (Yes, I include BIZ and INFO because they were created to relieve name pressure on COM/NET/ORG.) Others have articulated this reasonably well, so I will just summarize: I. While many new "vanity" TLD's do provide a competitive opportunity for branding and naming (in a presumably competitive market), the same can NOT be said across the board. Why? 1) Any organization that wishes to own a "home" on the 'net is *required* to register a domain name. It is our online address. 2) Baseline domain names should be stable over time. It doesn't matter if... -- nonprofit (I have *.ORG, *.NET and other such domains)... -- for-profit (I have *.COM, *.US, etc) or even -- personal (I have *.US, *.INFO, etc) The result of variable pricing is obvious: **people MUST consider changing domain names **if their existing name becomes too costly over time. Result: Internet instability. Old links no longer working. Archives broken as a result... 3) We have NO alternatives if we want to remain viable and stable. (Because each TLD is operated by a single organization.) -- To retain an Internet address, I must pay whatever the underlying registrar charges. II. Clearly, TLD domain registries are monopolies... and should be regulated as such. -- In fact, they should be viewed as a public service -- ICANN should contract with whoever will provide: ** best TLD service ** at lowest cost! -- Over time, I expect prices to *decrease*, not increase. -- Over time, I expect improved ability to retain existing domain registrations at *lower* cost, with *improved* ability to work around any renewal hiccups. -- Stewardship of foundational TLD's should be in the hands of dedicated *service* entities, committed to serving well at minimum cost. III. Increased prices, and reduced stability... ... are marks of FAILURE, not effective competition! This is an aside, yet important: -- Many libraries are now eliminating most "overdue" fines, noting that they do not accomplish the desired goal. -- Communicating with the borrower accomplishes much more -- Charging the cost of a lost book accomplishes the cost-recovery purpose -- The same is true in domain renewal. -- The goal should NOT be forcing domain owners to lose domains! -- Registrars could provide long and increasing-over-time grace periods for renewal for domains -- It costs nothing to retain an inactive domain in the database! What I observe today is the opposite: -- Squatters easily steal existing domain names, and -- hold them hostage hoping to gain a windfall. That's unethical. (Example: due to a serious medical event, I failed to renew a domain on time. I was hospitalized, then recovering... Only a month later, it would cost me $3,000 to purchase from a squatter. I can't afford that, so I changed the name, costing me significant hassle, and destabilizing any links to my web site.) IV. Suggestion: TWO baseline agreements are needed * ICANN should recognize the difference between registry-as-service and registry-as-marketplace * Long-existing TLD's, that have existed for decades, should be recognized as public trust "service"rather than "marketplace" * Service TLD rules aimed at stability would be helpful -- Minimum registration of multiple years -- Ability to register for more than a decade at low cost (this helps everyone concerned!) * Service TLD's could also have certain restrictions similar to what is provided with geographic TLD's (eg .US) -- Associated with a named individual or entity Bottom line: ** ICANN, will you do the right thing and ** stand up for the public interest? Hi Russ/ICANN, Your job is to make domain names cheaper for us, customers (website owners) - not more expensive and unavailable to many! I've been using com/org/net - even after you introduced (MONOPOLY ON) dot super, dot dentist dot guru & sooo manyy others, company owned domains - all w/ two things in common - a terrible pricing on user/my end AND monopoly (one company owns one personalized TLD. Don't you think that domains should be affordable? Especially com/net/org/biz/info. Work for: PEOPLE ! Small web owners and businesses who DO CARE FOR EVEN THE SLIGHTEST PRICE INCREASE (less than 1usd/y, for example) Don't work for: registrars, companies and others who own multi million dolar businesses. I am a .org registrant. I've read about a lot of bad decisions under the UDRP. The URS seems even worse. I heard the URS is very new and is being reviewed now to see if it is working properly. It is too soon to include an untested policy on .org domains where for a few hundred dollars anyone could try to shut down someone else's website. Telling the .org registry that it can charge any price it wants for renewing a domain name is a terrible idea. Why would you allow them to set a crazy high price? They could try to force the domain owners to pay a very high price each year to renew their domain name, and if the domain owner either won't or can't, then the .org registry could take away their domain name, set a high registration price on it, and then try to find someone else who is willing to pay a high price for it. This is very unfair to long time .org domain owners who may see their prices raised sky high for no reason. You let the new domain extensions charge any price they want, but that hasn't gone so well. Lots of people got burned when the new registries offered low rates for the first year, and then after people registered the domain names and some built web sites on them, some of the prices were raised through the roof. .Org has been working just fine for decades where the prices maybe go up a little bit each year. Allowing huge price increases from one year to the next could ruin .org for everybody. I think you should pay a little more attention to what is good for the owners of .org domain names. The registries are doing fine. They don't need your help as they are already making plenty of money.
