This is the information I have received: “ICANN’s current contract with Public Interest Registry (PIR), the group that runs the .org domain name, allows PIR to increase the wholesale price of .org domains by 10% a year. Now ICANN is proposing extending the contract to operate .org but letting PIR set whatever prices it wants.” Please keep the 10% cap. As I understand the situation, this a monopoly type situation, and therefor it is necessary to have price increase caps, because individuals with .org domains cannot be realistically expected to have any ‘direct replacement’ product available from competition. Switching to another domain like .us or .food etc. would not be a satisfactory substitute, because that is like (or in some cases, effectively is) requiring a company to change a brand name.

I am a domain name registrant. ICANN does not seem to recognize the difference between a legacy extension created with the support of the US government, that predates the existence of ICANN and that has millions of existing users and the brand new extensions that started off with a new set of rules, in particular no price controls, and no existing registrants. They have completely different characteristics, history, and ownership structure. It is not acceptable for ICANN to ignore these differences and to propose that they be treated the same. Removing price caps is not fair to .org domain owners. Many of them have websites that they have used for years. If price caps are removed, the cost to renew their domain names may become too expensive, and they could be forced to give up websites that are important to them. The Uniform Rapid Suspension policy is too new and untested to apply on domain names that may be 20 years old or more. With the URS, the domain names could be taken down in a matter of days with little notice. ICANN should be doing more to protect owners of .org domain names. Why is ICANN trying to remove price protections for .org domain owners, so many of which are non-profits, so that they can be overcharged for their domain names? Thank you for listing to us! The registries do not own the .org domains and have no call on making owner's profits for operating the registry service. The .org TLD, along with the other original TLDs, were created with tax payer money and the value of these do not belong to any particular business to exploit. This plan is ridiculous on its face. The .org registry operator did not put capital at risk to purchase the TLD. It was contracted as a service provider and there is no valid reason why that should change. No one can say the .org TLD is under utilized or needs marketing power behind it to make the most of it. This whole thing smacks of corruption, or at least incompetence, and I hope everyone responsible at ICANN loses their job over this. Cedric Dettmar

To lift the cap on .org domain names is to effectively silence organizations who are mostly volunteer and communicating information for public good. This is unconscionable and un-American. Even grandfathering in existing .org names is no help, because America only functions because there are groups beyond commercial enterprises stepping up to fill in the gaps of helping those without means in all sectors of life. Profit must not be the only valid motive for action for a healthy country.

ORG is one of the original top-level domains. Though it is used by some commercial entities, it is used — as was the original intent — by many organizations, clubs, non-profits both large and small. The current price controls on .ORG domains help such smaller organizations afford to operate their websites. It adds great value to the internet to have them in the .ORG TLD, and would do harm and cause needless confusion were these clubs and organizations forced to abandon their domain due to price increases. I strongly oppose the removal of price caps particularly on ,org registrations. Many charities, non-profits and other voluntary organisations use price caps and they should be protected.

Please do not allow this increase of price of .org domains (and others). I understand it may seem logical from a contractual standpoint but it will have an extremely negative impact on the entire internet.
