I am very concerned with the proposed change to remove price caps on .org domains. As someone who currently has a few of these and leads a non-profit organization, I am very disappointed that this would even be considered. Low costs are part of what keeps the internet a place of freedom. Allowing resellers to charge much higher prices will destroy the free and open internet as we know it and possibly cause many of our non-profits to have to change their names and domain names just because of unreasonable costs. - Adam Bowers

I am a .org registrant. Legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs and should be treated that way. Legacy TLDs are what the internet was built on. They are essentially a public trust. They are very different than new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private parties. Registrants of these legacy extensions should be entitled to price predictability & stability. Advancements in technology should be driving the cost of operating a registry down, yet prices keep going up? Removing price caps is unfair to the millions of domain registrants. They will have no price protections. Every registrant will be at the complete mercy and whims of the registry. This could result in a transfer of funds from millions of non-profits to one non-profit, with no benefits to the domain registrants. ICANN is supposed to represent a "bottom up, consensus-driven multistakeholder model". ICANN should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN should be looking out for the .org registrants, in particular the non-profits. There is no "public benefit" justification to these changes. It is just a handout to business at the expense of registrants’ rights and protections. Where are the protections for the millions of domain registrants that this could effect in a negative way? These changes would give way too much power to the registry. This is not acceptable for a "public benefit" organization that exists to represent many stakeholders. Regards, Alastair.

I am writing to express my strong objection to the removal of the price cap on .org domain fees. I know that ICANN has had an advisory committee reviewing the plan and that they have expressed very strong concerns about it as well. The fact that ICANN is ignoring the advisory committee's concerns, as well as disregarding significant consumer protection issues with the plan is not only concerning but also alarming given your role. I urge you to take into consideration the concerns and objections of the advisory committee and others and keep a price cap in place to protect consumers from potentially extreme rate hikes now or in the future. Dear ICANN, ICANN staff should not unilaterally impose URS in legacy TLDs when that issue is precisely what is being examined by the volunteer ICANN Working Group who has been mandated to review this issue. ICANN policy making is supposed to be a 'bottom up, multi-stakeholder model'. I believe that legacy gTLDs are fundamentally different from for-profit new gTLDs. Legacy TLDs are essentially a public trust, unlike new gTLDs which were created, bought and paid for by private interests. Registrants of legacy TLDs are entitled to price stability and predictability, and should not be subject to price increases with no maximums. Unlike new gTLDs, registrants of legacy TLDs registered their names and made their online presence on legacy TLDs on the basis that price caps would continue to exist. Unrestrained price increases on the millions of .org registrants who are not-for-profits or non-profits would be unfair to them. Unchecked price increases have the potential to result in hundreds of millions of dollars being transferred from these organizations to one non-profit, the Internet Society, with .org registrants receiving no benefit in return. ICANN should not allow one non-profit nearly unlimited access to the funds of other non-profits. ICANN appears to be entirely catering to registries by removing price caps. We support many non-profit organizations who use .org domain names and they are increasingly constrained by budgets set a year or two in advance where every dollar is managed. Allowing unlimited .org price increases hurts the organizations that do the most good in the US. Dear ICANN I, as part of the general public are very troubled by the what appears to be ICANN Staff's complete disregard for registrants and the public interest when it comes to the removal of all price caps in the Proposed .org Renewal Agreement. Most non-profit organisations use .org domains and taking off the price cap will negatively affect these vulnerable institutions, of which I am working for one in South Africa. I therefore submit my non-approval of the removal of the price caps in the proposed .org Renewal agreement. When price caps are released, greed will eventually follow, and that will lead to many non-profits that are price sensitive to lose their domains. This is bad for the world, and bad for non-profit organisation or public benefit organisation beneficiaries. The few individuals who are behind this, will obviously reap the gain of this crime against humanity. My service provider informed me of the price shocks that would follow. Dear ICANN team, There is huge potential for abuse with the new URS policy, particularly for charities that may have had domains registered for many years, and might not have the resources to survive without a functioning website. The internet and the world wide web were founded on the (academic) principles of openness, freedom, and equality. (Berners-Lee made the Web available freely, with no patent and no royalties due.) Domains are the entry point to the net, and people and institutions treat them as such. The legacy gTLDs should not be commercialised like the new gTLDs as this goes against the principles of the web. Moreover, those who have already registered legacy TLDs did so on the assumption that the prices would not suddenly increase. This is a change that will not affect large and rich institutions, but will affect small charities and individuals, and possibly the academics and academic institutions that first brought the net into being. This undermining the nature of the net and heading down a path that destroys net neutrality. Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this and thank you for considering my comments. Since the .org is mostly used by non-profit organizations, raising the price would mean having to move a website to a different domain extension. This could financial hurt a not for profit group, I urge you to not let greed get in the way of logic.
