GNSO Council - Looking ahead from ICANN 45
Dear GNSO Councillors, It's a week since ICANN 45 in Toronto and I would like to take the opportunity to personally update you with a little progress and the development of my thinking in the interim. Together with the Vice Chairs, we took advantage of being in Toronto to meet with the GNSO Policy staff and secretariat. The objective was to discuss and understand key practical interactions and ways of working together to ensure smooth operational functioning of the Council. We met for a little over an hour, had a productive, open discussion and I believe we are all off to a good start. As we commence working together as a "new" council and begin the terms of our incoming Councillors, I am very keen to extend a very warm welcome to all those who joined us in Toronto. More than that, I'd like to make sure we give the incoming Councillors a proper introduction to and induction onto the Council. With this in mind, I'll be writing to them in order to set up at least one meeting. If, from your own experience of joining or working on the Council, you think that there are specific imprtant areas we should cover in an induction, please don't hesitate to let me know. During the course of the election process, we touched on key areas that needed on going, renewed or new attention and I'd like to mention these. I think of them as strategic priorities and my list is as follows: 1. Work load management and prioritisation 2. Internal relations and effective working of the Council 3. External relations and effective representation of the Council I am sure most of you will think of other areas that you may wish to see on this list. In any case, I look forward to expanding on points 1-3 above with some practical initiatives. In the meantime, and indeed for the whole of my term as chair of the Council, I will welcome any constructive input and feedback from you. As discussed at various points, my overarching objective is to work with you, the groups you represent and the relevant ICANN staff to ensure that the GNSO Council is effective, seen to be effective and that our work is appreciated and respected. Best wishes, Jonathan
Dear Jonathan, Many thanks to you for this warm welcome. I'm really thrilled to be joining the Council on behalf of the NCSG. Oddly enough, when I was on staff some years ago as GNSO Policy Officer, Glen and I prepared the first formal inductions for new councillors. Back then we focused a lot on then-current substantive policy issues. But now, at least as steep a learning curve is the many processes and procedures that have been developed. To be effective councillors, I think us new people could probably do with equal guidance on the 'how' of policy as well as the 'what'. In that vein, can I ask for a link to the operating procedures to be circulated? All the best, Maria On 25 October 2012 11:53, Jonathan Robinson <jonathan.robinson@ipracon.com>wrote:

Dear Jonathan, dear fellow councillors, I am looking forward to a productive and cooperative term on the Council and am very excited to be joining all of you in these interesting times for both ICANN and the GNSO. As a way of introduction, I am the former secretary of the Registrar Stakeholder Group and work with Key-Systems, a registrar based in Germany. While I represent the registrars in the contracted parties house, I will be open to input and ideas from all directions if they serve to strengthen ICANN and the GNSO as a whole as well as improve policy for all parties. A newcomer to the council, I will be looking for support from the more experienced members to climb the steep learning curve Maria referred to. I am looking forward to communicating with all of you and work jointly on solutions to the issues before us. Best regards, Volker Greimann

Many thanks Wolf, And thank-you Maria for taking the initiative on asking for this information. All councillors being as familiar as reasonably possible with these procedures can only help in our effective functioning as a council. The GNSO Website was recently re-developed and is a good resource. I'd encourage all Councillors to keep a close eye on it and to please make any suggestions for improvement. I fully agree to this kick-off, Jonathan. Point 3 may be seen in context with the entire GNSO, a discussion with the SG/constituency leaderships re clearly defined boarder lines could be useful. In addition I'd like to mention that I've been together with otheres in tasks with some GAC members re the early and continuous involvement of the GAC in PDP's. From this it seems to me that on one hand we have elaborated a well defined policy development process but on the other hand there may be some lack in communication and education of others outside the GNSO. I'd like to suggest this as a topic for one of the next calls to think about whether tis is a real issue and possible solutions.
