The 2026 String Similarity Guidelines: Automating Mistakes of the Pass
See the post from Sophia Bekele in CircleID this week. https://circleid.com/posts/2026-new-gtld-string-similarity-guidelines-automa... The overall matter she is highlighting provokes thought and is sufficient to cast the need for a clear understanding of what is coming. To my mind, this whole Latin diacritics matter adds some grist to the mill. Thank you Carlton Samuels for a nice article. It made a very good reading early in the morning for me in India. My submission; People should continue to use technology even when it is erroneous because the benefits of efficiency, connectivity, and progress generally outweigh the risks, and because using it allows for the identification and correction of errors. It is important to use technology even if it has flaws: * Iterative Improvement: Using technology allows us to identify errors, leading to better, more refined versions in the future. This is a best fit method for the asynchronous mode of working on the Internet. * Efficiency and Productivity: Technology automates complex tasks, saving significant time and effort in daily life and business. DNS is an application layer idea and ICANN Remit makes the boundary conditions reasonably clear. It feels good to the boundary conditions tested out on this basis on the complex applications and APIs. * Mitigation Over Rejection: Rather than abandoning technology, the goal is to use it with "reasoned skepticism" and "abundant caution," taking responsibility for verifying results to ensure they are used safely. We need to highlight the "black box" method. "Black box" became popular in software technology development because it allows for testing without requiring knowledge of the internal source code, focusing instead on user-centric functionality, usability, and performance. The "devil" is the detail and so be it. Thanks for sharing. At face value, concerns that merit further study to verify their validity and if proven valid, go on to further study. We must remember that in this policy the At Large, and particularly LACRALO with roots in many communities that base their writing in Latin alpahabet and diaritics, the balance between room for innovation and competition, on one hand, and the defense of at-large general users of the Internet against confusion from which derive scams and crimes is delicate and underway in a related forum. The abundance of adjectives in the article awakens some puzzlement about the intrinsic élan energizing this intervention; its self-reference to past history also provides illumination. None of the injurious stateements about persons or entities mentioned should form part of the file as they remain unproven and do contain serious accusations. Operational note: readers of the translation in the Spanish-language list bewre, the automatic translator is also translating the strings in the URL that are semantically identifiable as English-language words so you may be led to a 404 error. Only in the English original is the correct URL preserved. One may be tempted to form a Working Party that defines the Terms of Reference for a Study Group that establishes a procedure to designate a Task Force to look into this problem and recommend that when the translator identifies a URL it pass it on "as is." With opaque algorithms and no right of appeal, ICANN's credibility hangs on whether transparency and fairness are restored before final adoption.
