Women in Tech and Unstoppable Domains to apply for a New gTLD in Next Round

Hi, The are working on capturing the mind share with their Web3 for blockchain names & Web2 for DNS Domain names narrative. Will be interesting to see how it goes. I have met Unstoppable Domains, they are determined, persistent, and seem capable. The quote from the article that may have some direct relevance to end users, CPWG, and ICANN next round: "Looking to the future, Unstoppable Domains and Women in Tech Global intend to apply for a generic top-level domain (gTLD) Web2 with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)." If they succeed at obtaining a DNS gTLD with WITG, then having the same name in both 'classes', will offer end users some interesting possibilities, but mostly will prevent confusions of a major sort.. But they have advertised this name, so what guarantees are there that others may not apply for this string and the multitude of other names they have claimed they will apply for in other articles (do not have the reference at my finger tips). In that case contention is likely, and if they do not obtain the strings, then it will possibly be problematic for the end users as it will cause serious confusion. As far as I know, there are no carveouts for alternate naming systems, such as blockchain, the so called "web3", names. Thanks for passing the article on. avri On 2024-05-09 00:01, Justine Chew via CPWG wrote:

Hello All, Thank you, Avri for sharing your thoughts on this because I was thinking the same thing about the publicity before applying which is enough to make someone who had not given it a thought to put in an application for the same. Thank you Justine for sharing. Kind regards, Bukola. On Thu, 9 May 2024 at 15:38, avri--- via CPWG <cpwg@icann.org> wrote:

On the other hand, other applicants might find some bias against them as a result of the publicity. Even if they had the idea first. On balance, I think pre-application publicity should probably be discouraged. I agree that pre-application publicity is not the greatest for the applicant, but on the other hand, it proves to the community that we were right in thinking there would be some demand. And FYI, D3 (a new company founded by Former Donuts founder Paul Stahura and domain industry veteran Fred Hsu) announced their intention to apply for a bunch of new gTLDs in the next round: * NEAR Foundation applies for .near top-level domain - Blockworks <https://blockworks.co/news/near-foundation-top-level-domain> (title misleading, but content is clear that they “will” apply not that they have applied * ApeCoin DAO gives thumbs up to .APE top-level domains (cointelegraph.com) <https://cointelegraph.com/news/ape-coin-dao-favor-ape-top-level-domains> * MAKE, Casper Partners With D3 To Apply For .cspr Top-Level Domain | Markets Insider (businessinsider.com) <https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/make-casper-partners-with-d3...> * SHIB Partners with D3 to Apply for the .shib Top-Level (globenewswire.com) <https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/12/19/2798836/0/en/SHIB-Part...> * Core Chain Partners With D3 To Apply For .core Top-Level Domain - Crypto Briefing <https://cryptobriefing.com/core-chain-partners-with-d3-to-apply-for-core-top...> * Gate.io and D3 Partner to Apply for and Obtain '.Gate' Top-Level Domain (yahoo.com) <https://finance.yahoo.com/news/gate-io-d3-partner-apply-134000703.html?gucco...> Jeffrey J. Thank you Justine for sharing this article. It is a very interesting point to discuss in its eventual application. Following Avri's thoughts, yes, they have to preserve aleatory publicity. Anyway, it is a great debate for ICANN's team and beyond. *Denise Avivit de Alcantara Hochbaum*, Phd, AIA International Member *Mobile: +1 (917) 757-2513 * *910 M Street NW Apt 501 Washington DC* *Design Factor Solutions, President* On Wed, May 8, 2024 at 8:01 PM Justine Chew via CPWG <cpwg@icann.org> wrote:
