ACTA Letter to the members of the European Parliament
Dear all, this is just to share with you that one of our members, Internet Society Luxembourg, has written to the members of the European Parliament regarding further debates and the ratification process of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) foreseen in June 2012. The full text of the ISOC letter you can find here: http://internetsociety.org/internet-societys-letter-dated-honourable-members... Let me express my deep appreciation for this initiative in the interest of an open and accessible Internet and due multi-stakeholder based procedures. Dear Wolf, On February 2 ISOC Belgium addressed a message to a group of Belgian MEPs as well as to the Belgain minister of Economy and Telecommunications on the ongoing debates around ACTA. We got very quickly some response from the EU MEPs indicating us that at that moment nothing was yet decided even if BE MEPs had voted positively. They also mentioned us that our remarks and input would certainly influence their position. Furthermore, this was also the lever for the Belgian minister to request a study about the impact and consequences for Belgian government and citizens. So, we may say that our action at national level has been very positive. Details about the decision taken by the minister : http://datanews.knack.be/ict/nieuws/nieuwsoverzicht/2012/02/16/vande-lanotte... We will of course continue to spread the message and the ISOC statement has now also been send to the Belgian MEPs. Dear Wolf, Thank you very much for this information. Hanne Severinsen, President of European Media Platform, joined this initiative and shared original version of text in Denmark. I am working on translation this letter into Ukrainian and on adaptation of it for Ukrainian parliamentarians (as far as Ukraine is not the member of the EU). I also cite EU court decision on Internet content filtering. This open document will be sign by European Media platform, ISOC Ukraine initiative group, Ukrainian Pirate Party. Dear Wolf, all Using the ISOC draft as a basis, ISOC Finland (the Finnish ALS) sent letters to all Finnish MEP's already on February 10. So far, replies have been received from the Greens group, who say they are against ACTA, and from the Finnish vice chair of the ALDE group, along with video showing her question about the effects of ACTA at the session of the Parliament. Dear all, ISOC - Bulgaria managed to do slightly more than that (with the help of many others, of course): all Bulgarian MEP have issued a declaration against ACTA. The government has temporary stopped the ratification process officially. The Party of the European Socialists issued a very strong statement, and it was largely due to the president of PES, and ISOC member - former Bulgarian PM Sergei Stanishev, who joined ISOC in 2000 (sic!). Of course, in the light of the current decision of the EC to send the issue to the ECJ, we have shifted our focus, and have gone public on the Bulgarian National public radio to say that we understand the EC admits its incompetence (if they thought ACTA is OK, why send it to the ECJ?), but also that we would like the EC to submit ACTA for impact assessment, and analysis of how it will influence the basic rights of the EU citizens. We also urge the EC to ask the right question about the balance between the interest of the copyright holders and the users. We'll see if the EU politicians will pick some of our proposals this time again. best, veni On 2/22/2012 15:54, Yrjö Länsipuro wrote:

Dear Veni, Yrjö and Oksana, with some delay - thanks for your feedbacks on the issue what shows that multiplied initiatives in European countries may have some impact on parliamentarians and institutions -- and in the best case, ACTA may not pas these European hurdles (according to one of my favorite principles called hope ;-) Kind regards, Wolf Veni Markovski wrote Wed, 22 Feb 2012 16:08

Dear Wolf, Thanks for the thanks :-) They are not entirely deserved, actually :-( The letter your refer to was sent to all MEPs by the European Bureau of ISOC. In parallel, ISOC Luxembourg wrote a similar letter to Luxembourgish MEPs (and government). I know some other chapters were active also: Belgium, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland among others. In short, this is a team work. In Luxembourg, the Green party, and some socialists voiced similar concerns. Interestingly, the socialists are part of the government coalition right now. The government itself has not been very vocal, short of saying that "no changes to laws are required" and that "thre are a lot of misunderstandings". Nevertheless, they will wait for the vote at the European parliament before proceeding further. In the meantime, let's see what the opinion of the European Court of Justice will be.
