Dear all, I thank Sébastien for nominating me for a second term on the Nominating Committee (2023) and all those who expressed their support, including for my previous self-nomination, which of course already indicates my acceptance to serve. As an ICANN structure, the NomCom is unique in the sense that its every annual incarnation, mainly for reasons if confidentiality, is an entity sui generis, separate from its predecessor and successor, free to evolve and improve its procedures each year, implementing (at its discretion) recommendations from the previous NomCom. The advantages of this arrangement are obvious, but it also raises issues about NomCom’s institutional memory, in addition to what is carried on by the staff. This makes it very important that committee members represent different “generations”, are familiar with different layers of NomCom history and are a mix of “old hands and new faces”. During the preceding decade, I was on six NomComs – once the Chair, once the Associate Chair, and four times the voting delegate from EURALO. I think that with that background, I can make my contribution to the continuing development of the NomCom institution this year and in 2023, in addition to playing my part, as a representative of At-Large and EURALO, in the selection process of our future leaders. However, I have to note that according to the NomCom guiding documents, NomCom delegates act only on behalf of the global internet community; they act as individuals and are not beholden to their appointing constituencies as they work by consensus to find the best people for leadership bodies. Which, after all, is also the interest of At-Large and EURALO. As an ICANN structure, the NomCom is unique in the sense that its every annual incarnation, mainly for reasons if confidentiality, is an entity sui generis, separate from its predecessor and successor, free to evolve and improve its procedures each year, implementing (at its discretion) recommendations from the previous NomCom. The advantages of this arrangement are obvious, but it also raises issues about NomCom’s institutional memory, in addition to what is carried on by the staff. This makes it very important that committee members represent different “generations”, are familiar with different layers of NomCom history and are a mix of “old hands and new faces”. During the preceding decade, I was on six NomComs – once the Chair, once the Associate Chair, and four times the voting delegate from EURALO. I think that with that background, I can make my contribution to the continuing development of the NomCom institution this year and in 2023, in addition to playing my part, as a representative of At-Large and EURALO, in the selection process of our future leaders. However, I have to note that according to the NomCom guiding documents, NomCom delegates act only on behalf of the global internet community; they act as individuals and are not beholden to their appointing constituencies as they work by consensus to find the best people for leadership bodies. Which, after all, is also the interest of At-Large and EURALO.
