This may be due to the greylisting feature implemented some days ago on ICANN e-mail servers. Greylisting is a spam fighting tool. It may slow down the delivery of e-mail from occasional posters, sometimes up to one hour. Regular posters are only impacted once. Yes Patrick, that is definitely the case. I checked it yesterday in my smtp logfiles. But greylisting is widely used and efficient. /Manuel Am 06.11.2010 12:24, schrieb Patrick Vande Walle:

Greylisting is a crude hack to move local problems to the common internet out there. It's one of the most prominent anti-social developments.
This is slightly OT, but out of personal interest, can you elaborate on this ? I thought spam and spambots were a prominent anti-social behaviour ? How is it anti-social to ask to pospone a SMTP connection for a short while in order to distinguish a real MTA from an infected computer with a SMTP proxy ? Patrick

All MX where tried even the low priority ones: icann.org. MX 10 pechora4.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora5.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora6.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora7.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora8.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora1.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora2.icann.org. icann.org. MX 10 pechora3.icann.org. So I have eight connections before the first "real" greylisting comes into effect. My mail system does not know the time window to retry in advance and usually failes to hit it withing the first three or four rounds. Does that stop spammers? No, spammers simply send email twice. So if you not running greylisting, you get even more spam. Overall greylisting is used to reduce the system load an the greylisters side in exchange for lot of additionals ressources at all communication partners and the whole internet. Thank you very much!

That's not greylisting That's an odd setup But it's not greylisting that's causing your issues - the multiple MX records with the same priority are the problem

That's incorrect

Huh? I think you're confusing greylisting with challenge / response Greylisting doesn't require any action on the part of a legitimate sender or receiver, but it blocks a very high percentage of spam
