      Dear all,

Thanks for these questions and comments. The main goal of the selection exercise is to fill the vacant positions. However, in doing so, the SSC may decide to adjust the overall composition of the slate of candidates to ensure balance of skills and representation.

As Marika noted below, there was no process for SG/Cs to endorse specific candidates in the 2017 application process. It is up to SSC members to determine the extent to which they would like to take SG/C endorsements from the 2018 application round into account. Endorsements are listed on the wiki and in the poll.

The poll is just the first step in this selection process and members can use it as a tool to organize their thoughts and record preferences, as well as note additional comments and questions. Please fill out the poll by Monday at 12:00 UTC: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BLFHST9. There will be an opportunity to discuss any outstanding concerns on Monday’s call.

The selection among the new candidates should be only for the 2 primary slots and the one among the rest of the slate for secondary candidates.

As a result, it may be worth asking the NCUC and BC reps on this group to confirm whether the original candidates (Wolfgang Kleinwaechter, Michael Karanicolas, both NCUC, and Adetola Sogbesan, BC) were endorsed or are being endorsed to help inform the selection process?

  *   The RySG has clarified that they will be endorsing with equal weight two candidates for this process. Erica Varlese, a candidate from last year who has submitted updated materials during this application period and Patrick Kane, a new applicant.
  *   The SSC has the opportunity to consider the full slate of candidates, both existing from the last application round and new. Therefore, it is important to review materials from all candidates included on the wiki before you complete the poll. The SSC may choose to adjust the full slate in addition to filling vacancies to ensure diversity of representation and skill set.

The GNSO Council has asked the SSC to take on a selection process in the coming weeks related to the re-scheduled start of the Third Review of ICANN Accountability and Transparency (ATRT3) [icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_news_anno...>. I know this is a busy time for many of you with ICANN63 coming up, but this will need to be quite a quick process with action required on your part in the next two weeks (details below). Please fill out this doodle [doodle.com]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__doodle.com_poll_wqfawm2...> to help us schedule an SSC meeting to complete this process in early November and look out for additional emails with instructions about evaluating the candidates prior to the meeting.

Last year the SSC went through a selection process to recommend candidates for the ATRT3 (details here<https://community.icann.org/display/GSSC/ATRT3>). The start of the ATRT3 was then delayed to allow for conversations and public consultation on the schedule of ICANN reviews (see public comments on short-term [icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_public-2D...> and long-term [icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_public-2D...> options to adjust the timeline of reviews). ICANN Org is now recommending to the Board [icann.org]<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.icann.org_public-2D...> that that ATRT3 begin in January 2019. The GNSO has been asked to finalize its slate of candidates by 31 October, but we are working to find a little more flexibility in this deadline.

Some time has passed since the original call for volunteers, and the GNSO is now asking the SSC to ensure that the GNSO has a full slate of candidates to put forward. At a minimum, two of the original primary candidates and at least one of the additional candidates will need to be replaced:

Original primary candidates:

Stéphane Van Gelder (RySG): Replacement needed

Original secondary candidates:
