Hello, The latest .top zonefile is empty, are there any issues with it? Thanks Alex

Looks like it's been empty since July 1. I would assume the download from the hidden master failed. Since this is obviously wrong I am surprised it didn't trigger an alarm when it failed. Today is a holiday in the US so it may be a few days until we can find someone at ICANN to notice. R's, John

Perhaps surprisingly, that's not what I see, my recent counts of total and signed delegations seen in the downloaded ".top" TLD zone are: date zones signed 2025-06-19 4211370 30410 2025-06-20 4211370 30410 2025-06-21 4222999 30711 2025-06-22 4234270 30323 2025-06-23 4239703 30252 2025-06-24 4255234 30137 2025-06-25 4272807 30055 2025-06-26 4277878 29864 2025-06-27 4290243 29830 2025-06-28 4304321 29871 2025-06-29 4317576 29846 2025-06-30 4322197 30889 2025-07-01 4341137 34471 2025-07-02 4351212 34457 2025-07-03 4364625 34246 -- Viktor.

It seems I overlooked a safety net I have in place, my code skips (not silently, but I have to check the logs) zones files that don't start and end with identical SOA records. So *empty* .top zone data leaves the previous day's data in place. I did indeed run into an empty zone file yesterday, which was consequently ignored. The zone file is still empty today. -- Viktor. 🇺🇦 Слава Україні!
Hello ICANN, The downloaded zone file for .top has been empty now for 4 days in a row. On the last successful download it was the 6th largest zone file. The top.txt.gz file is 20 bytes. A zone file retrieved from the registrar that is empty should never be passed on to the API for downloads. This process is lacking the most elementary checks and alerts. FWIW, I've opened a support request with ICANN for this and have reached out to the TLD operator as well. I'll share any information that comes out of it here. Joe Wein via gtld-tech <gtld-tech@icann.org> wrote:

Thanks for fixing the problem, Victor! I hope ICANN also put in place checks to reject empty zone files in the future and automated internal alerting to conditions such as these, so that outage notification doesn't have to happen via this mailing list. Thanks! Any insight into what is causing the problem? It appears to be specific to this one zone, so is there a problem with this particular operator? -Jan
Dear colleagues, We are happy to report that the .TOP download and publication process in CZDS has been fixed. We've identified an issue in the process that integrates the downloading of the zone file and the publication through CZDS. The bug related to limits that were reached by the size of this zone file has been fixed to support larger zone files. Please note that we are currently employing a temporary solution to download and publish the zone. We are actively working on implementing a permanent fix and we should release it in the incoming days.
Thanks! Any insight into what is causing the problem? It appears to be specific to this one zone, so is there a problem with this particular operator? -Jan _______________________________________________ gtld-tech mailing list -- gtld-tech@icann.org <mailto:gtld-tech@icann.org> To unsubscribe send an email to gtld-tech-leave@icann.org <mailto:gtld-tech-leave@icann.org> ________________________________________________By submitting your personal data, you consent to the processing of your personal data for purposes of subscribing to this mailing list accordance with the ICANN Privacy Policy (https://www.icann.org/privacy/policy <https://www.icann.org/privacy/policy>) and the website Terms of Service (https://www.icann.org/privacy/tos <https://www.icann.org/privacy/tos>).
