Mikey/All I agree with Wolf-Ulrich that this has identified a weakness in our operating procedures that needs to be fixed. Let's discuss more when we're together in Singapore. Meanwhile we should all take exceptional care that any statements made are positioned as individual comments and opinions unless previously agreed through a formal process that needs to be embedded within our operating procedures. That goes for views expressed both within and external to ICANN. Meanwhile let's take a breather and not make any knee jerk decisions as a result of what is clearly a mistake on Mikey's part. We've all been there and done things that we'd tackle differently with hindsight. Until we've assessed any reaction to the statement none of us are in a position to conclude whether there really are major issues or whether it's little more than a storm in a teacup for which Mikey is obviously feeling somewhat embarrassed. tony From: owner-ispcp@gnso.icann.org [mailto:owner-ispcp@gnso.icann.org] On Behalf Of WUKnoben Sent: 12 March 2014 12:09 To: Mike O'Connor; ispcp@icann.org Subject: Re: [ispcp] apology Mikey, we might need a new process to find out the correct hats (or "capacities") when we are going to talk to whomever. Council member replacement, resignation (?) is referenced in the rules of procedures. In order to calculate the "damage" for our community you should let us know any reactions the NPR broadcast has caused..... Just to formally handle this: apology noted! Best regards Wolf-Ulrich From: Mike O'Connor <mailto:mike@haven2.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2014 1:28 PM To: ispcp@icann.org Subject: [ispcp] apology hi all, i filled out the Pew Research Center poll about "the Internet in 2025" on a day when i was in a bad mood. i'm *sure* i said that the opinions expressed were my own, but that was stupid - i should have completed the form as an individual, not as your representative to the Council. the upshot is a bad misrepresentation - my view appearing to be yours. i'll try to send a correction, but the damage is done. i'm learning a lot of valuable lessons in this new role you've elected me to. unfortunately at your cost. i would be happy to resign if you think it appropriate. i'm really sorry about this. here's a link to the article (NPR is National Public Radio in the US - "all tech considered" stories are generally broadcast on Monday evenings on NPR's national radio news program). http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2014/03/11/288695332/the-internet -will-be-everywhere-in-2025-for-better-or-worse and here's the quote: The downside? Group-think, mob mentality and manipulation. "The Internet will be used as the most effective force of mind control the planet has ever seen, leaving the Madison Avenue revolution as a piddling, small thing by comparison," says Mikey O'Connor, an elected representative to ICANN's GNSO Council, representing the ISP and Connectivity Provider Constituency. sorry, mikey PHONE: 651-647-6109, FAX: 866-280-2356, WEB: www.haven2.com, HANDLE: OConnorStP (ID for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
