Dear Colleagues, As requested in our call I am enclosing a document explaining how ICANN org determined the fees for the next round of new gtlds. The budget for the SubPro is US$70 million, the ODA estimated that there were going to be 2000 applications for new gtlds. ICANN org considered this a maximum estimate and to reduce the risk they made all the calculations based on 1000 applications. This is how they reached the sum of US$208.000 for the application fee. Anyway, ICANN org will reimburse the applicants if the number of applications is higher. Hope this informations is useful. Best regards, Osvaldo
Many, especially in the developing world, found the previous fee of $185,000 plus related fees to be too high to pay to participate in the previous new gTLD programme resulting in a restricted programme. So this new higher fee of $208,000 will cause similar problems and restrictions unless there is a workaround, is there ? This is still being discussed in the SubPro IRT but for now the only workaround is the Applicant Support which, for those selected, could cover up to 85% of the application fee, this % hasn’t yet been agreed. According to ICANN org this fee is, in real terms, lower than the $185.000 of 2012. Regards, Osvaldo

It will be interesting to see how the applicant support program is applied if there's a large number of applicants from developing countries. As for the real term costs compared to the last round......no comment. Mmmm ... in many developing countries including my own, the local currency has significantly depreciated with respect to the US dollar since 2012. So, in real terms this will be much more expensive and much less affordable in those countries, even more so than what was the case of 2012. It will hence be interesting to see how the Applicant Support programme will be used to provide a workaround. Thanks Osvaldo. That's a really helpful clarification. The application fee remains quite a high barrier to overcome for some potential applicants, who may well need some assistance. My hope was that the application fee would be lower than the first round, where we had limited data to work on, particularly with regard to the costs of evaluating submissions. My personal view is that the ODA estimate is also very optimistic, but I'd appreciate hearing the views of other ISPCP members.
